Our Management, Sales, and Operations teams headed out to celebrate over 30 years of industry excellence hosted by Specialised Textiles Association and we didn't come home empty-handed.🏆
Our Sam Johnson Basketball Court Structure took out the Domestic Category Award for Shade Sails or Structures (Knitted Shade Cloth)! It’s a huge win that speaks directly to the quality, detail, and pure collaboration our team pours into every single build.
But the fun didn't stop there. Director, Jamie Howard, and Head of Projects, Connor Walker, took to the stage to present a masterclass case study on the Coolum Beach Retail project. They shared insights into how we solve complex installation challenges, how we deliver at scale and tackle roadblocks as a tight-knit teamwith industry peers.
We're incredibly proud of our team, their recognition, and even prouder to be pushing the boundaries of design and engineering alongside the best in the industry.

We love creating great outdoor spaces that give people a place they want to spend time in.

Before this impressive structure was installed, outdoor dining options at the Coolum Retail Precinct on the Sunshine Coast were limited by the weather. On hot summer days, finding a comfortable spot could be a challenge, while rain often meant patrons had to move indoors or leave altogether.

Today, that's a very different story.

Our shade structure has transformed the space into a comfortable, inviting destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The result is more seating and greater flexibility for businesses, and a much better experience for patrons who can now enjoy the vibrant precinct regardless of the weather.

Projects like these demonstrate the real value of well-designed shade and weather protection structures—not only enhancing the look of a space but helping businesses maximise revenue and create places where people genuinely want to gather.

Most of us walk under a shade structure without ever thinking about why it holds its shape so effortlessly. What you’re actually looking at is engineering through tension.
Tensile membrane structures rely on carefully engineered curves and opposing tension forces to create strength, stability and performance.
One of the most interesting concepts behind this is called “anticlastic curvature” — where the membrane curves in opposite directions at the same time, similar to a saddle shape. Our award-winning Noosa Botanic Gardens - Friends shade structure is a great example of this principle in action, where the form itself becomes part of the engineering. That shape isn’t just architectural styling - it helps the structure:
• Distribute loads evenly
• Improve wind performance
• Reduce stress points
• Assist with water runoff
• Span large areas with less steel
In tensile architecture, the form itself becomes part of the structural engineering. Next time you look up at a shade structure, you’ll probably see it a little differently.

It’s not every day we see an entire project loaded onto one truck. This 50 meter dual-column carpark shade structure is on its way to Peak Downs Mine, with the steel, fabric, hardware and even the footing cages all transported together by semi truck — a pretty unique sight for a structure of this scale.
Projects like this take a huge amount of planning from our Operations team long before installation begins. From fabrication and logistics through to load configuration and site coordination, every component needs to arrive ready for the next stage.

It’s easy to focus on the finished product, but Labour Day is about recognising the work that goes into getting it there — the early starts, the coordination, the attention to detail, and the people who make it happen.

Some shade replacement projects are a little more complex than they first appear — and this recent project at The Coffee Club Park Road was definitely one of them. Our team was tasked with replacing the extremely weathered dual-conical PVC membrane at this busy site — a job that required absolute precision. With parts of the structure tying directly into the building, the membrane pattern was uneven and demanded a high level of accuracy from measurement through to installation.
From detailed site measurements through to fabrication, the patterning process alone took seven weeks. Then came the installation, where coordination was key to making sure both conicals stayed perfectly aligned as the new membrane was fitted. We love the outcome made possible by teamwork, precision, and the expertise of the Versatile crew!

Behind every structure we deliver is a team working hard to keep things moving. Right now, our Project team Connor and Jack re managing a record 70 projects at once! This is a huge milestone that reflects not only the effort of the project and operations teams, but also the work happening behind the scenes from the sales team to bring those opportunities through the door.
From planning and coordination through to fabrication and installation, it takes focus, teamwork, and a lot of effort to keep this kind of momentum going.
We’re incredibly proud of what our team is achieving, and grateful to every client who continues to back us. The numbers are exciting, but it’s the people behind them that make it all happen.
