🌿 🌿 In-Ground vs. Raised Beds: Which Wins? 🌿

Choosing how to set up your garden layout is one of the biggest decisions you'll make before planting. Both methods have major perks, but here at The Pene Patch, we are firmly Team Raised Beds! 💪🏽

🪵👇 Here is a quick breakdown of how they stack up:

🏡 In-Ground Beds
The Pro: They are completely free to start!
The Con: They are much harder on your back & knees, & they warm up much slower in the spring.

📦 Raised Beds (Our Choice!)
The Pro: Soil warms up faster, drains beautifully, & you deal with far fewer weeds. Plus, you can plant items closer together!
The Con: There is an upfront cost for materials and soil to build them initially.

🛠️ How to Build Yours in 4 Steps:
1️⃣ Frame: Put together simple rectangle frames using untreated cedar boards. Depending on your budget, you can be both resourceful & creative here!
2️⃣ Place: Pick a prime location that gets 6+ hours of daily sunlight - this is very important!
3️⃣ Layer: Put down cardboard first (to block grass), followed by compost & rich topsoil. We also use larger branches & logs at the base to save on soil costs (check out our previous post on the Hügelkultur method!)
4️⃣ Plant: Fill it up with your favorite closely-spaced crops. Use companion planting where you can!

🐶 Poppy-Mae is on harvest duty today! We are cutting back our lemongrass & safely burning off the garden excess which will feed the compost. 🔥♻️ We can’t get enough of those fresh aromatics, especially whilst cooking our favorite Thai dishes, now I feel like a Laksa! 🍜👩🏼‍🍳

Lemongrass thrives so well in our climate, making it a Pene Patch staple… Are you growing lemongrass in your garden? What do you love making with it? Let us know! 👇

When more people adopt sustainable habits, they become the norm. They also inspire and influence the people around us to do the same. Systemic change only comes from all of us being aware of the problems. Most of us don’t just wake up one day and decide to help dismantle the systems destroying the planet. It starts with small sustainable lifestyle changes, creating a behavioural spillover in our lives and the lives of our friends and families. Planting the tiny seeds of change that grow into something so much bigger.

A vegetable garden is a wonderful way to give back to the Earth, give back to your dinner table and family. A small gesture that creates food sustainability, lowers food miles and environmental impact while promoting healthy eating at the same time

Happy Earth Day 2026 🌏🫶🏼💚

"Don’t throw it, grow it!” Here’s my secret to a never-ending supply of celery for soups, snacks & fresh pet food (our Parrots & Guinea Pigs). Just look at that new growth! It’s the easiest way to turn your offcuts into a fresh harvest. *They won’t grow as thick as store bought but the smaller leafier storks pack way more flavour! ♻️👨🏽‍🌾💪🏽
