A job description can tell us what a role involves. It can't always show us what it's like to do it.

Getting out on site gives us a clearer understanding of the working environment, the demands of the position and what the team needs from a new employee.

That insight helps us assess candidates against the reality of the role, not just the requirements on paper.

A job description can outline the responsibilities, skills and experience required for a position. But it doesn't always capture the reality of the working environment.

The pace of the operation, site conditions, team dynamics and day-to-day demands can all influence who is right for the role.

That's why understanding the workplace matters. As part of IRP's 5-Step Approach, site visits help us build a clearer picture of what the position actually requires before we recommend candidates.

The more we understand about the role, the better we can assess who is suited to it.

Losing a good employee doesn't just create a vacancy. It creates an operational problem.

Repeated turnover puts pressure on supervisors, adds to the workload of existing teams and means businesses are continually recruiting and training replacements.

Reducing turnover starts with understanding why people leave.

At IRP, our 5-Step Approach focuses on understanding the operation before making a placement. Our Iceberg Model looks beyond the obvious, while our ODE values — Ownership, Delivery and Empathy — shape how we approach the challenges businesses face.

Because improving retention isn't just about finding more people. It's about understanding what helps them stay.

Loosing a good employee doesn't just create a vacancy. It creates an operational problem.

When turnover increases, the impact can reach well beyond recruitment. Production can slow, supervisory pressure increases, team performance can be affected, and businesses are forced back into recruitment mode.

But retention isn't something that starts when an employee hands in their notice.

It starts with the role itself.

Clear expectations. Meaningful work. Consistent feedback. Development opportunities. Strong leadership on the floor.

These are all factors that can influence whether good people stay and continue contributing to the operation.

In this article, we look at the practical ways WA manufacturing and warehouse leaders can approach employee retention, and how better job design and workforce planning can help protect operational performance.

If turnover is becoming a workforce challenge, let’s talk about what’s happening on the ground https://lnkd.in/grTseNfB

Finding the right person is only the start.

A successful placement shouldn't be measured by whether someone turns up on day one.

The real measure is what happens after that.

Do they settle into the team?
Do they understand what's expected?
Are they performing?
And most importantly, do they stay?

When turnover is high, the impact reaches beyond recruitment. Supervisors spend more time replacing people, teams carry additional pressure and productivity can suffer.

That's why post-placement support matters.

At IRP, our relationship doesn't end when someone starts. We stay close to our workers, supervisors and clients to understand how things are tracking and address issues before they become bigger workforce problems.

Recruitments gets someone through the door. Workforce partnership helps keep them there.

Filling a vacancy is one thing. Building a reliable workforce is another.

Finding someone to fill a role is only the beginning.

For industrial businesses, the real.challenge is finding people who can perform in the environment, fit the team, and contribute to the operation.

That requires more than a job description and a shortlist.

It requires understanding the operation - the workflow, the team, the role and the challenges behind the vacancy.

That's why we don't just ask "Who do you need?"

We ask what's happening on the ground.

At IRP, our approach starts on site and continues beyond placement, helping businesses build workforce solutions around their operational needs.

We've explored what a genuine recruitment partnership looks like, and why the right recruitment partners should be focused on more than filling vacancies.

What does one no-show actually cost your operation?

One absence might seem manageable. But when supervisors are repeatedly finding cover, teams are operating below capacity and overtime starts to build, the impact can extend way beyond one missed shift.

Workforce instability can affect productivity, overtime and operational continuity, and the real cost isn't always obvious.

Is workforce instability costing your business more than you think?

Your supervisor shouldn’t be your contingency plan.

When someone doesn't turn up, supervisors are often the first people to solve the problem - finding cover, reorganising the shift and managing the immediate disruption.

Occasionally, that's part of running an operation. But when it becomes a regular part of the role, the impact extends beyond the individual absence.

The more time supervisors spend managing workforce gaps, the less time they have to focus on production, performance, quality and their teams.

That's why staying close to supervisors matters. They're closest to the operation and understand where the pressure points really are.

A good workforce solution should start by listening to the people managing the work. That's where the real picture becomes clear.

WA’s infrastructure, defence and housing pipeline is continuing to put pressure on an already tight labour market, increasing competition for skilled and semi-skilled workers across the state.

For industrial businesses, the impact isn’t just harder recruitment.

It can mean longer vacancies, rising wage pressure, more overtime and greater pressure on the people already keeping operations running.

And that’s where workforce planning becomes important.

When the labour pool is already tight, waiting until a role becomes vacant can leave you competing for the same people as everyone else.

The businesses that are better prepared will be looking at their workforce before they need to.

Which roles are critical?
Where are the gaps?
Who is carrying too much of the workload?
What happens if you lose the key person tomorrow?

At IRP, we believe workforce solutions start with understanding the operation. That means looking beyond the immediate vacancy and understanding what your workforce needs to perform effectively.

We’ve explored what WA’s tightening labour market could mean for industrial employees, and what businesses can do now to prepare for further pressure.
