We had hit one of Melbourne's busiest freeways for some essential asphalt coring!

Coring is a vital part of pavement investigation; it helps us verify existing structures and depths so we can design the perfect resurfacing treatments.

One of the key findings of these projects was that an average crew retrieves 10-15 cores per shift; our hardworking team crushed it by recovering 26!

In 2006, I was on this road physically coring the pavement, examining the materials and preparing the rehabilitation recommendations.

Twenty years later, we returned.

2006 average deflection: 0.370 mm
2026 average deflection: 0.365 mm

Almost unchanged.

The pavement remains structurally sound overall, with localised defects better addressed through targeted maintenance than full reconstruction.

Cracking, rutting and patching can point to deeper issues within the pavement structure and subgrade. Site Geotechnical’s investigation helped identify the underlying conditions and inform practical rehabilitation options, including foam bitumen stabilisation.

Rehabilitation works were delivered by Roadstone Recycling and PPS Group, with selected footage and project details credited to their case study.
