Philodendrons 🌱

One of the most common and easier plants to look after. A plant that comes in many shapes, sizes, colours and etc. Its a big family of plants and is great for beginner gardeners.

Such a low maintenance plant that loves part sun indoors or shaded outdoor areas. It is native to rainforest so it doesn’t like full sun and thrives in humid areas. Does not like wet feet so water when soil is dry to the touch. Cut any dead foliage, this will encourage new growth. Don’t be to scared if you cut to much off. Finally, fertilise during their growing periods, which are normally summer and spring time.

These plants were grown for their flower in Hawaii and sold as a cut flowers. It was an important business in Hawaii where they thrive in the climate and were sold worldwide.

A fact I did not know and would like to try one day, is these guys are an epiphytic plant.
What’s epiphytic you ask?
Well it means they are an organism that’s grown on a surface of another plant.
So if your out walking in a rainforest and you see those plants growing on old, large rainforest trees, these are the guys that can attach their roots to the tree and live off that.

Not the most common indoor plant you’ll see in many homes, but it should be and I’ll tell you why.

Anthuriums are a tropical plant that loves a warm, tropical, sunny spot indoors. If it is placed outside, it will still do well and can tolerate a light frost and cool weather. However in order for them to flower, they need to be in their humid positions to show their beautiful flowers. Feed them well when flowering and they’ll love you for it.

Plant your bulbs!
If you’ve got the opportunity to stay home today why not use today as a good excuse to plant your bulbs. With this latest cold snap now is a great time to get those bulbs in the ground ready for spring.

A good rule of thumb for planting most bulbs is to have them in well drained soil where they will get full sun to part shade. More sun the better though. Then to plant, roughly dig to twice the size of the bulb itself. Then once they’re in the ground give them a good soaking.

The last of our bulbs that we have available. Ixia is a simple bulb that suits most conditions and loves full sun. This bulb however does like water and needs regular watering. Plant the bulbs 5-10cm apart and dig 5cm deep.

The king of bulbs!! The one bulb everyone thinks of first, and that’s the striking daffodil. An unforgettable plant that everyone loves.

Daffodils love a full sun position, but requires protection from the wind. It is suited to a temperate/dry climate. Again the only water it will need is a good soaking once it’s planted then when shoots appear, water weekly. Plant 15cm wide by 12cm deep. A good tip is the deeper the bulb the healthier the plant will be and will stop from splitting.

Sparaxis bulbs 🌱

A lovely easy to look after bulb that can suit any gardener. Sparaxis suits a sunny position that can just about live in any climate. They don’t need a lot of water which gives a tick in the box to these water restrictions. Plant them 5-10cm wide and 6cm deep.

Hyacinth’s, one of the queens of bulbs. Any bulb enthusiast has to have hyacinths in their garden. Hyacinths love full sun and are suited to temperate/dry conditions. They also look the goods in pots, just remember to put them in full sun.

To plant, place them 15cm apart by 12cm deep. Water well after planting and leave them be until shoots appear.

Anemone bulbs 🌱

A plant that looks stunning mass planted that are very hardy and can tolerate any condition. A beautiful bulb that is well suited to the novice gardener. These bulbs can strike a bit earlier and come up late winter to early spring.

To plant these guys, do the opposite of other bulbs and plant the point of the bulb face down. Plant every 15cm by 4cm and water well. After that only water once a week. A good tip to get these guys going is to soak the bulb for an hour before planting.
