Steel treads, steel stringers, and one reason: maintenance.

The coating on a steel stair is good for 20 to 25 years. A traditional timber stair is closer to two or three, depending on what you've put on it.

When these get dirty, you hose them down. That's the whole job.

I've spent my whole career building other people's houses. This one's ours.

A 1975 build, so nothing about it is straightforward — every new bit has to tie back into what's already there. Which is the sort of job we like.

Four walls out of the middle and it's opened right up. Fourteen by five of kitchen, living and lounge, and with three young boys in the house that space earns its keep.

Still to come: the laundry, a 7.2 by 6 metre deck with a raked ceiling to match the existing roof, and the garage turned into a master bedroom.

Hearing this one meant a lot.

At the start, she told us what she was most nervous about was whether her own ideas would survive the build.

They did. The coastal feel, the views brought inside, the arch doorway to the bathhouse, the spiral stair up to the rooftop deck she balked at first.

Thank you for trusting us with your home, for every idea you brought to the table, and for having a go at the tricky stuff with us. Jobs like this are why we do what we do.

Huge effort from the boys on this one.

From suspended formwork and structural concrete to steel fabrication, renovations and complete residential builds, RTJ offers an impressive range of capabilities under one roof. And 2026 has brought a pretty special milestone, being named Subcontractor of the Year at the Master Builders NSW Northern Regions Excellence in Building Awards for their work on the Awarrawa Beach House project alongside JTech.
We caught up with Rhys and Terri to talk family, building their business on the Coffs Coast and their ambitions for the future.

Five years in, and the best bit is still the strip.

Cam started with us on carpentry, switched across to formwork, and finished his apprenticeship anyway.

There's more to formwork than people think. It all has to be dead strong to hold the pour and still come off leaving a mint finish, you don't find out whether you got it right until you strip it.

Cam's words: that's the most satisfying part.

Come and have a look at the shed.

It starts at Dave's desk — everything drawn in CAD and made production-ready before it hits the floor. Then the guillotine, and the 100 tonne brake press that weighs 13 tonne on its own.

A set of stairs with custom balustrade and custom treads: about five days from order. A set of builders posts: three or four hours.

And it isn't only stairs and structural steel. A toolbox for the truck, something for the caravan — if it's metal, it happens here.

No ties. No Z-bars. Nothing running through the face of the wall.

These are the 3.9 metre off-form concrete walls on our project with — a timber-look finish, gurneyed back to bring the grain out a bit more.

Holding a pour that size together without putting anything through the wall is something we'd never done before.

This one we're proud of.

Nine townhouses, nine Hebel firewalls, and RTJ on the carpentry start to finish.

Up the coast having a look at the nine we've just completed for Balance. All separated by Hebel firewall, all fully clad, and we ran the carpentry the whole way through.

James Hardie fine texture on the outside. Inside it's the aluminium doors and windows, highlight windows, cavity sliders, every internal door and all the hardware — right down to the wardrobe shelving and the door handles. One of them's got a walk-in robe with its own shelving detail and hanging rail.

Good one to work on. The quality Balance brought to the finish is immaculate, and we're super proud to have been involved.

The brickwork isn't holding your house up.

Lot 10 is at roof-on stage and ready for windows, which makes it a good time to point at the builders posts.

We fabricate them at the workshop — but only after the frame's in and someone's been out to check-measure on site. They land on the porch slab and carry the structure.

The bricks that go around them are a veneer. The post is doing the work.

The most critical part of this build is the part nobody will ever see.

Roof trusses going in on Lot 17 at Nambucca. Once the ceiling's on, that's the last anyone looks at it.

Which is exactly why it has to be right.
