📋 Document Control on Site: Are You Working From the Current Version?

In temporary traffic management, having documentation on site is important. Having the correct and current documentation is critical.

Traffic conditions change. Work activities change. Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS) can be revised, and site arrangements may need to be updated as a project progresses.

That's why effective document control is an important part of maintaining a safe and well-managed worksite.

Everyone involved in the operation should be confident that the documents being used are the current approved versions and accurately reflect the work being undertaken.

Good document control includes:
✅ Ensuring the current TGS and relevant site documentation are available and accessible.
✅ Checking revision numbers and approval details before work begins.
✅ Removing or clearly identifying superseded documents so they aren't accidentally used.
✅ Making sure any approved changes are communicated to the people who need to know.
✅ Keeping required site records completed, accurate, and up to date throughout the shift.
✅ Reviewing documentation when site conditions or work activities change.

Using an outdated document can mean the controls on the road no longer reflect the approved arrangements. In a changing traffic environment, that can create unnecessary risk for workers and road users.

At Barleys Traffic Management, we know documentation isn't just paperwork or a box-ticking exercise. It provides the information our teams need to understand the plan, implement the correct controls, and work consistently and safely.

Know what you're working from. Know it's current. Know where to find it.

Because effective traffic management starts with everyone working to the same plan.

🌼 School Holidays Mean More Activity on Our Roads

As the September school holidays begin, families will be heading out for day trips, events, local attractions and holidays, bringing changes to the usual traffic patterns on our roads.

There may be more vehicles travelling at different times of the day, along with increased pedestrian and cyclist activity around popular destinations, events and recreational areas.

For traffic management crews, changing road use means staying alert, monitoring conditions and being prepared for the unexpected.

Variable Message Signs (VMS), like the one pictured, are one of the tools that can help communicate important information to road users about events, changed conditions and what may be happening ahead.

If you're out and about these school holidays, you can help keep everyone safe by:

✅ Slowing down when approaching worksites and changed conditions
✅ Following traffic signs and Traffic Controller directions
✅ Staying alert for pedestrians and cyclists
✅ Allowing a little extra time for your journey
✅ Being patient when travelling through traffic-managed areas

At Barleys Traffic Management, we know effective traffic management is about more than managing vehicles. It’s about helping workers, families and the wider community move safely through changing road environments.

So whether you're heading to an event, taking a day trip or setting off on a family holiday, take your time, stay alert and enjoy the journey.

Different traffic. Different destinations. The same priority: getting everyone there safely.

🌿 Would You Recognise a Potential Spill?

Not every spill is obvious.

Sometimes the first indication of fuel, oil or another contaminant is simply a rainbow or oily sheen on a wet road surface, like the one shown here.

It might look minor, but it shouldn’t be ignored.

On a worksite, contaminants can spread with water and potentially reach surrounding soil, stormwater drains or waterways. Early identification and action can help prevent a small issue from becoming a larger environmental incident.

It’s a good reminder that recognising the early signs of a spill is just as important as knowing how to respond.

✅ Stay alert to unusual staining or oily sheens on road surfaces.

✅ Don’t assume a small spill isn’t significant.

✅ Report suspected spills or leaks promptly.

✅ Take appropriate action to contain the affected area and prevent further spread.

✅ Follow site environmental and spill response procedures.

At Barleys Traffic Management, environmental awareness is part of working safely and responsibly. Staying alert to what’s happening around us helps protect not only our worksites, but also the communities and environments in which we operate.

See it. Report it. Act early. Protect the environment.

More Than Cones and Signs

When you drive past a worksite, it's easy to notice the cones, signs, and barriers.
What you don't always see is everything that happens behind the scenes to make that worksite safe.

Every traffic management setup starts long before the first cone is placed. It involves:
✅ Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS)
✅ Risk assessments
✅ Site inspections
✅ Communication between crews
✅ Ongoing monitoring as traffic and site conditions change

Every sign, cone, and barrier is positioned with a purpose, helping to create a safer environment for workers, road users, cyclists, and pedestrians.

At Barleys Traffic Management, we know that effective traffic management is about much more than traffic control devices. It's about planning ahead, identifying risks, and adapting to changing conditions to keep everyone safe.

Because behind every cone and every sign is a team committed to helping people get home safely.

💛 Today is R U OK? Day

It’s an important reminder to check in with our workmates, crews and friends because on-site and off, mental health matters.

In traffic management, we work in environments that can be demanding and high-pressure, where teamwork, communication and trust are essential.

At Barleys Traffic Management, we’re committed to fostering a culture where people look out for one another, support is visible, help is accessible, and conversations are always welcome.

Looking out for each other isn’t just part of the job. It’s part of building a strong, supportive team.

Sometimes, a simple “How are you going?” can start a conversation that makes a real difference.

Today is a reminder, but checking in shouldn’t be limited to one day of the year.

Let’s take the time today, and every day, to check in, listen, support and stay connected.

💛 Ask R U OK? Any day.

To the dads holding it down on the roads this Father’s Day 👷‍♂️

Early starts. Long shifts. All weather, all hours. You’re out there keeping crews safe and traffic moving, often missing the breakfasts, the games, and the quiet moments at home.

At Barleys, we see the commitment it takes. Every cone placed, every stop/slow call, every safe work zone set up, it all matters. You’re looking after your team, the public, and your family in the best way you can.

Today we recognise the fathers across the traffic control industry who show up, day in and day out. Solid, reliable, and proud of the job.

Stay safe out there and make the most of the time you get with your loved ones.

Happy Father’s Day 💛

Site Audits: Keeping Our Sites Safe and Compliant

Setting up a traffic management site correctly is only the beginning.

Conditions can change throughout a shift. Signs can move, weather can change, equipment can require attention, and the work being undertaken may evolve.

That’s why regular site audits are an important part of how we maintain safe, compliant and professional traffic management at Barleys.

Our site inspections may look at:

✅ Traffic Guidance Scheme (TGS) implementation
✅ Sign condition, visibility and positioning
✅ Weather conditions and sign stability
✅ Traffic management vehicles and equipment
✅ Vehicle pre-start inspections
✅ Traffic Controller and TMI qualifications
✅ PPE and communication equipment
✅ Site communication and professional conduct
✅ Scope of works and approved documentation
✅ Aftercare requirements

But being audit-ready isn’t about waiting for an inspection.

Our crews are expected to continually monitor their sites and respond when conditions change. If a sign has moved, equipment needs attention, weather conditions have changed or something no longer reflects the approved arrangements, it needs to be addressed.

At Barleys Traffic Management, site audits help us identify what’s working well, address issues early and continually improve the safety and quality of the services we provide.

Set it up correctly. Check it regularly. If something isn’t right, fix it or report it.

Because a safe worksite needs attention throughout the entire shift.

Are You Ready for the New National Traffic Management Skill Sets?

National Skills Week may be over, but developing your skills is an ongoing journey.

The temporary traffic management industry is changing, and 1 February 2027 marks an important milestone.

Under the Austroads National Training Framework (NTF), Traffic Controllers working in participating jurisdictions will be required to hold the relevant National Temporary Traffic Management Skill Set.

The National Training Framework has been developed to create a more consistent, skilled, and capable traffic management workforce across Australia. It combines classroom learning with supervised practical experience, helping participants build the knowledge, confidence, and real-world skills needed to work safely in dynamic traffic environments.

The transition period has been in place since 1 February 2024, giving both individuals and organisations time to complete the required training before the new requirements take effect.

These changes are about more than meeting industry requirements. They're about improving safety, strengthening professional capability, and helping protect workers, road users, pedestrians, cyclists, and the wider community.

At Barleys Traffic Management Training, we're proud to support new entrants and experienced traffic management professionals as they navigate the National Training Framework and prepare for the future.

If you're unsure which National Skill Set applies to you or your team, now is the perfect time to start planning.

Because investing in the right training today helps build a safer industry for tomorrow.

Skills Are Built Through Learning, Practice and Experience

Every experienced traffic management professional started somewhere.

No one begins their career knowing how to read a Traffic Guidance Scheme, assess site risks, communicate effectively with work crews, or manage changing traffic conditions. These are skills that are developed through training, practical experience, and a commitment to continuous learning.

The traffic management industry continues to evolve. New standards, new technology, and changing road environments mean that learning doesn't stop once a qualification is achieved.

It continues throughout a career.

At Barleys Traffic Management, we believe effective training should do more than help people meet industry requirements. It should develop the practical knowledge, confidence, and decision-making skills needed to perform safely in real-world environments.

That's why our focus is on building capable professionals who understand not only what to do, but why they do it.

During National Skills Week, we recognise the importance of lifelong learning and celebrate everyone who is investing in their skills, whether they're starting their journey or continuing to build on years of industry experience.

Because every new skill developed today contributes to a safer worksite tomorrow.
