Tomago Aluminium Company Pty Ltd

Tomago Aluminium is Australasia’s largest aluminium smelter and has been operating 24 hours a day In 1991 further expansion started.

Construction on Tomago Aluminium began in 1981 and continued until first production in 1983. At the time of first production, it was the world’s first large-scale AP18 plant, with two potlines and an annual production capacity of about 240,000 tonnes. A third potline and additional facilities were added to the site and were operational by early 1993. The expansion increased annual output by 140,00

0 tonnes and created 150 new positions at the smelter. The flow-on employment impact created an additional 750 jobs in the region. Expansion continued with the extension of Potlines 1 and 2 which was completed in December 1998. In 2001 Tomago Aluminium received Development Approval for the AP22 project, a $200million conversion to AP22 technology. The project involved the re-engineering of the pots to run at greater capacity, taking the smelter’s output to 530,000 tonnes annually. In 2009, development approval was obtained to further increase metal production to 580,000 tonnes per year, and in 2015 approval to increase production to 590,000 tonnes was granted by the Department of Planning.

Today, our workforce came together to recognise R U OK? Day and remind one another that a conversation can make a real difference.

Employees connected over a BBQ hosted by MATES in Manufacturing, signed the MATES flag and shared cupcakes with their crews. Our onsite Converge wellbeing consultant, Nikki Strong, also visited production areas to meet employees and raise awareness of the support available.

R U OK? Day may happen once a year, but checking in with those around us matters every day.

Tomago Aluminium was proud to join the Australian Aluminium Council and industry colleagues at Parliament House in Canberra for the Aluminium Showcase 2026.

For the first time, Australia’s complete aluminium value chain, from bauxite mining and alumina refining to smelting, manufacturing and recycling, came together in one place to demonstrate its importance to Federal decision-makers.

CEO Jérôme Dozol and CFO Andrew Newman represented Tomago at the showcase, which attracted more than 200 attendees, including three Federal Ministers.

Australia’s aluminium industry supports more than 75,000 jobs and contributes $18 billion to the national economy each year. Here at Tomago, we employ more than 1,000 people, engage around 200 contractors and spend $800 million locally each year, supporting businesses, families and communities across the Hunter Region and beyond.

A strong future for Tomago Aluminium.

We’re proud to announce that Tomago Aluminium has reached an agreement with the Commonwealth and NSW Governments that secures the long-term future of Australia’s largest aluminium smelter.

The agreement will provide Tomago with reliable, internationally competitive electricity through to 2038 and give us the certainty to invest $1.1 billion in the future of our smelter.

This includes investment to improve reliability and performance, extend the life of our assets and strengthen our competitiveness, alongside $100 million for decarbonisation initiatives and demand response capability.

As one of the Hunter’s largest employers and a major contributor to Australian manufacturing, this is a significant outcome for our people, their families, our suppliers and the broader Hunter community.

It also positions Tomago to play an important role in NSW’s energy transition, supporting electricity system reliability and the integration of more renewable energy.

CEO Jerome Dozol said the agreement provides the certainty Tomago needs to invest confidently in its future.

“This is a great outcome for our workers, who have lived through a great deal of uncertainty over the last two years, and for the Hunter region and local businesses and suppliers.”

Thank you to Nikki Nobilo for delivering her second Mental Health First Aid training course onsite at Tomago Aluminium.

So far, 29 employees have completed the course with Nikki, gaining valuable skills and confidence to support someone who may be struggling, whether at work or in their personal lives.

Nikki’s energy and knowledge kept the training engaging, and we look forward to welcoming her back onsite.

This is one of several initiatives supporting mental health and wellbeing at Tomago. One-third of our workforce has also completed Mental Health General Awareness Training with MATES in Manufacturing, as we work towards our goal of becoming a MATES accredited site.

We are also proud to have an EAP counsellor onsite every fortnight, along with a newly equipped Wellbeing Room for employees to access to further support their mental health and wellbeing.

We're proud to have concluded Tomago Aluminium's 2026 Workplace Giving Program with the presentation of $17,500 to Charlie's Run 4 Kids.

The donation will help provide practical and financial support to local children battling cancer and their families, ensuring they receive the care and assistance they need during some of life's most challenging moments.

This year's Workplace Giving Program saw an incredible $150,000 distributed to five local charities, made possible by the generosity of our employees through payroll giving, together with Tomago Aluminium's annual contribution.

Today we were proud to present $17,500 to Hunter Animal Rescue and $17,500 to Our Circle Maitland through Tomago Aluminium's 2026 Workplace Giving Program

These donations have come from the pockets of our employees, who contribute through voluntary payroll donations each pay cycle. Tomago Aluminium also contributes to the fund each year.

The funding will help Hunter Animal Rescue continue rescuing and rehoming animals, while Our Circle Maitland will be able to continue providing over 2000 meals in the next 12 months to the vulnerable community in Maitland.

Together, these donations form part of the $150,000 raised through our Workplace Giving Program in 2026.

Tomago Aluminium presented a $17,500 donation to OzHarvest today as part of our 2026 Workplace Giving Program.

This donation was made possible through the generosity of our workforce, who choose to contribute through voluntary payroll donations each pay cycle. Tomago Aluminium also contributes to the fund each year, helping maximise the impact for local charities.

The donation will help provide approximately 35,000 meals to families and individuals experiencing food insecurity across the Newcastle region.

The OzHarvest donation forms part of the $150,000 raised through our Workplace Giving Program in 2026, with further presentations to Our Circle Maitland, Hunter Animal Rescue and Charlie's Run for Kids taking place over the coming weeks.

Today, our team came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week with a Bush Medicine Workshop led by Elder Justin Ridgeway, Peter Detourbet and Kaiyu Maynard from Murrook Cultural Centre.

Employees experienced a Welcome and Smoking Ceremony, learnt about the traditional uses of native plants and bush medicine, and enjoyed a bush tucker tasting featuring local native ingredients and lemon myrtle tea.

The workshop provided a great opportunity to learn about Aboriginal culture, strengthen cultural understanding and celebrate the world's oldest continuing culture.

Thank you to Justin, Peter and Kaiyu for generously sharing their knowledge, stories and connection to Country with our workforce.

Today we proudly donated $80,000 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service through Tomago Aluminium's 2026 Workplace Giving Program.

This donation has been made possible by the generosity of our employees, who continue to support our payroll giving program so we can make a real difference in our community.

During the presentation, we heard how each rescue mission costs around $7,000, meaning this year's donation has the potential to help support around 12 lifesaving missions across the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Central Coast and New England regions.

Tomago Aluminium has proudly supported the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service for more than 20 years, contributing over $1.2 million through our Workplace Giving Program since it was first established by AWU members.

We were proud to welcome representatives from the East Maitland RSL Sub-Branch onsite last week for a cheque presentation following our recent ANZAC Day activities.

The cheque included a donation from Tomago Aluminium in recognition of the RSL's contribution to our onsite ANZAC Services, along with funds raised through the sale of poppies, pins and pens across site. All funds will go towards supporting veterans and their families through local programs and services.

During the visit, the RSL also presented Tomago with a framed photograph of the Burton brothers, local Tomago men whose story featured in our ANZAC Services and served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by so many Australian families.

We would like to thank the East Maitland RSL NSW sub-Branch for their partnership and ongoing contribution to our community, and our workforce for supporting this important cause.

Planning is already underway for next year's onsite ANZAC Services.
