Boots on, chainsaws out, cuppas gone cold before we’ve had a chance to drink them. 🪚🍃

That’s cleanup day for you.

Saturday’s wind did a number on Sydney, and the last few days have been property to property, sorting out what it left behind.

Weeks like this are why a lot of us like this job. You get dirty, you fix something real, and by the end of the day there’s an obvious before and after. Very satisfying.

If you’ve got snapped limbs, a fence knocked down by something that used to stand upright, or just a dodgy-looking big tree that you’re not sure will last another storm — don’t leave it until it’s too late. Get it sorted today.

But it’s not always that simple, we know. Shocker storms take all of us by surprise. If Saturday left your place looking a bit worse for wear, we’re here to help. Give us a shout.

If you're in Sydney, you'll have felt the weekend's storm. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded gusts of 113km/h at Penrith and 96km/h at Sydney Airport, among the strongest early-September winds we've seen in years, on the back of near-record spring heat.

The news channels are featuring plenty of reports of major damage, including downed trees. But winds like that don't always show damage straight away. A branch can be cracked internally, or a tree's root plate loosened, without anything looking obviously wrong from the ground. If a tree on your property took a battering this weekend, particularly anything large or already a bit unhealthy, it's worth having a proper look before assuming it's fine.

Stay safe, everyone!

Got a big old gum tree in the yard? They are some of the best things about a Sydney backyard, but the older and taller they get, the more worth keeping an eye on they are, especially if branches hang over the house, the pool or the driveway. Most mature gums are fine with a check every year or two, sooner after a big storm or windy night.

It's National Biodiversity Month! Every September, Australia turns the spotlight on the plants and animals that share our neighbourhoods, and how the choices we make in our own gardens add up.

We put together a few slides on why native plants matter, which ones do well in Sydney gardens, and some simple ways to support local wildlife this spring.

One thing we'd add from experience: getting the small decisions right matters most, right plant, right spot, pruned at the right time. If you're ever unsure, it's always worth asking before making a change you can't undo.

What natives are thriving in your garden this spring?

Happy National Wattle Day! Can you tell the difference between a Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) and a Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana)? What other types of wattle grow in your area? There are over 1,000 species in Australia!

Every 1 September, Australia celebrates the Golden Wattle, our floral emblem and the plant behind our green and gold colours. Our climbers spot it blooming on job sites all over Sydney this time of year, one of the small but beautiful perks of working outdoors for a living. National Wattle Day also kicks off Biodiversity Month, a good reminder of why we care so much about the native trees we work in and around every day. Spotted any wattle in bloom near you lately?

Not sure if that tree in the backyard is fine or a problem waiting to happen? Keep an eye out for dead or hanging branches, bark that is peeling, oozing or splitting, a trunk lean that seems new, or roots lifting the lawn nearby. Any of those on their own is worth a second look, and a proper inspection is a lot cheaper than dealing with storm damage after the fact.

September is the month to get your garden sorted before spring really hits. Cut back hedges, re-pot anything that has outgrown its container, aerate the lawn, feed and prune citrus, and clear away fallen leaves while the trees are still dormant. If you spot big dead branches, anything near power lines, or work that means climbing, that is where we come in rather than the ladder in the shed.

August Garden Jobs: Getting Ready for Spring

Spring's not far off, and there's a short window to get your garden ready before the new growth kicks in. This month's jobs: cutting back hedges, feeding and pruning citrus, aerating the lawn, and knowing when a "dead" branch is actually a job for an arborist rather than secateurs. Full rundown in our latest blog.

Winter's not done yet, but spring's close. Here's what to prune, feed and tidy in your Sydney garden this August, from pot plants to citrus trees.
