Shou sugi ban is an old Japanese technique β€” timber charred, then brushed back, so the grain becomes part of the design instead of hiding under paint. It's practical (naturally weather- and pest-resistant) and it's beautiful, in a way that gets quieter the longer you look at it.

That's the language this Tugun garden speaks. Drawing on Japanese tea house principles β€” restraint, framing views deliberately, giving the transition from indoors to outdoors real weight β€” the result isn't just landscaping. It's a considered pause built into a home.

If you're drawn to gardens with this kind of intention rather than just "more plants," I'd love to talk about what that could look like on your block. Gold Coast to Byron Bay.

Inspired by traditional Japanese tea house design, this renovation brought shou sugi ban charred timber cladding to the exterior and a sunken tea space inside, styled in the spirit of a chash*tsu.

Months on, it's the garden that's telling the story β€” our clients tell us the ground covers and their potted Wollemia nobilis (Wollemi Pine) are maturing beautifully, filling the space out exactly as we hoped.

A birthday wish of a teenage son to have a basketball court lead to a full Landscape Design for these busy, collaborative clients on the Gold Coast. It's been a joy to work with them and see this project come together with a raised low maintenance cactus and succulent garden at the rear and an inviting tropical vibe at the front to welcome them home.
