A look back at where it all began!

This is the original single-storey home before work started on its first-floor addition.

We've shared a few stages of the build along the way, and with the project now nearing completion, we're excited to show you just how much this home has changed.

Sometimes you don’t need more space — you just need to make better use of the space you already have.
As their kids got older, the way this family needed their home to work had changed.
Rather than extending the ground floor, we looked at how the existing layout could be reworked. By reorganising the space, we were able to create an additional bedroom downstairs and move the kitchen into the centre of the home.
The old cupboard under the stairs was incorporated into the new pantry, and space in the foyer was used to create a concealed Euro laundry.
Quite a lot changed, without making the house any bigger.
This was actually our second time working with this family. We’d previously built a studio in their garden, so it was lovely to be asked back to work on the main house.
We loved how this home came together. It’s a beautiful home to be in, but more importantly, it works for the family who lives there.

Rather than automatically looking at an extension, we looked at what we could achieve by reworking the existing ground floor.
By reorganising the layout, we were able to create an additional bedroom downstairs and relocate the kitchen into the centre of the home. The old cupboard under the stairs was incorporated into the kitchen as pantry space, and part of the foyer became a concealed Euro laundry.
Together, those changes completely altered the way the downstairs works — without making the house any bigger.
This was also our second time working with this family. We’d previously built a studio in their garden, so it was lovely to be invited back when they were ready to renovate the main house.
We loved how this home came together. It’s a beautiful home to be in, but more importantly, it works for the family who lives there.

There’s a lot you don’t see once a bathroom is finished.
Waterproofing starts well before the tiles go on. We build the floor joists to create the right fall towards the floor waste, then add the PVC membrane and water stop angles.
Next comes the sand and cement screed with Efflock added. We give that a week to dry before the painted membrane is applied to the walls and floor, with mesh bandage added at the junctions.
Once everything is dry, we’re ready to tile.

Before we get anywhere near the tiles, there’s quite a process involved in getting a wet area ready.
We build the floor to create the right fall towards the waste, then install the PVC membrane and water stops. The sand and cement screed goes down with Efflock added and is given a week to dry.
After that, the painted membrane is applied to the walls and floor, with mesh bandage at the junctions. Once everything is properly dry, we’re ready to tile.

It might not be the pretty part of a bathroom renovation, but once the tiles go on, all of this disappears from view. Getting these stages right is just as important as the finished bathroom you see at the end.

Somehow you’ve survived another year of early mornings and hard yakka. We hope you had a fantastic time celebrating with family and friends. We look forward to what the future holds.

There’s a little more going on here than just a new roof.

Jason and Will are installing two openable Velux skylights as part of the roof works on this renovation.

One is going above a new hallway we’ve created. Previously, you had to walk through one room to get to another, so the new layout gives the home a proper hallway and a much better way to move between the spaces.

We’ve also tucked a Euro laundry into the new hallway — something the owner is very excited about — and the skylight above will bring plenty of natural light into the space.

The second skylight is going into an existing bathroom we’re renovating. There’s no external window, so the skylight will give the room natural light as well as extra ventilation when it’s open.

A few well-considered changes that will make this existing home much nicer to live in.

A pretty big change to this family home.

The first-floor addition gave the family the extra space they needed, while giving us the opportunity to update the exterior and make the new level feel like it had always belonged there.

We kept the character of the original home, carrying the existing rooflines and detailing through to the addition rather than making the upper floor feel like something that had simply been added on top.

Getting closer on this first-floor addition in Engadine.

One of our carpenters working his way through some of the smaller jobs while there’s still plenty happening elsewhere on site.

The family are itching to get upstairs and start enjoying their new space — not too much longer now.
