Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit creative reuse centre based in Marrickville, in Sydney’s inner west. As an environmental charity, our mission is to make everyone experts in reuse by motivating, educating, and providing simple sustainable solutions. Each year we redirect around 250 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste from landfill to a new life with educators, artists, upcyclers, DIY enth

usiasts, tinkerers, set builders, window dressers, community organisations, festivals, charities, and more. We reach around 16,000 people each year with our 'choose to reuse' messaging via early learning, primary, secondary and tertiary education, community events and public workshops.

The equivalent of around 373 full council bins. 7,470 kilos saved from landfill. One incredible community. 💚 Every material that comes through our doors in May found a second life and that's thanks to the makers, educators, artists and community members who chose reuse. Here's to keeping good stuff out of landfill and in circulation where it belongs.

We are excited to be working with the United Nations Association of Australia NSW Division to celebrate world environment day. This year the theme is "The Materiality of Waste" and we will be making collages while reflecting on the circular economy to imagine new futures. All the collages will be compiled into a digital booklet to show our collective knowledge of sustainability issues and solutions. Check out the the Humanitix page for more details, and DM us for a discount code!

Armed with some basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers and wire cutters) and a little know-how, the children will be encouraged to gently and safely pull things apart to see what’s inside discarded electronics. We will look at machines across the eras and talk about changes in technology today, focusing on why these are valuable materials. While taking the devices apart, we will look at how they work, observing any physical mechanisms and making guesses about how information is relayed through motherboards and wires.
We will sort through the materials to find pieces that can be used in our afternoon creations. Working with cardboard and reclaimed plastics, students will make simple costumes inspired by vintage science fiction robots. We will practice joining methods such as tabs, lacing and reusable closures, but use traditional adhesives to securely adhere when needed.
This Sydney class is suitable for ages 8 to 13 years. It will be a jam-packed day of activities where students explore e-waste, practice design skills and build their very own robot costume or statue to take home. There will be a break for lunch and students are welcome to take snack/water breaks as needed.

Last week, our team took a trip to meet with our new partners at Interface at their incredible factory in Minto, NSW.

If you haven’t heard of Interface they design flooring with circularity in mind, considering the full lifecycle of their products, from design and materials through to recycling and reuse.

At Interface, good design is how circularity uses less, lasts longer, and delivers lower carbon without compromising on performance or aesthetics.

Stay tuned as we announce the exciting project we’re working on together.
