One Tian An Place | Shanghai, China
Completed (Parcel B + C) & Under Construction (Parcel A)

48 Towers | 2,200 Apartments | 507,600m² GFA

At One Tian An Place, 48 Residential Towers with 2,200 Apartments are Built and Under Construction in Shanghai.

“We want to humanise buildings in the district, to be more engaging to the public and contribute to the regeneration of communities and their neighbourhoods. We want
architecture to celebrate cultural identity, along with encouraging pedestrian activities and a more walkable and liveable city.” Koichi Takada.

The regenerative strategy begins at macro scale. Cars are moved underground, allowing the 188,000m² ground plane to be reclaimed for people, landscape and a continuous green spine connecting a dense residential community and five public buildings, also designed by Koichi Takada Architects.

The landscape introduces thousands of trees and shrubs indigenous to Shanghai, with mature tree canopies intended to create the experience of living within a forest rather than simply beside landscaped buildings.

At the gateway, Solar Trees Marketplace (also Completed) extends this approach through biomimetic canopies, natural ventilation, shade and planting. Together, these
systems use density as an opportunity to restore nature to a part of Shanghai that has rapidly urbanised.

‘Design, Nature & The Future’ In Conversation with Daniella Ohad. Wed 11 November 2026, 6pm
Museum of Arts and Design, 2 Columbus Circle, New York City

As an architecture student, Koichi Takada found respite from Manhattan in the green space of Central Park. This experience changed the way he approached architecture.

Now, he returns to discuss what our increasingly dense and digital cities need to give back to the people who live in them.

If one designed landscape can transform the experience of an entire city, what happens when we begin asking every building to contribute to our wellbeing?

Project | Upper House (Brisbane, Australia)

"High rise lifestyle has become so detached and disconnected – from the community, from nature, from one another. With Upper House we are looking to challenge that and establish a new model for vertical living that is, at its foundation, about connection.“ Koichi Takada

Upper House delivers 188 luxury apartments inside expressive architecture that places a strong emphasis on the importance of nature for wellbeing and a focus on holistic wellness and community.

Project | Upper House (Brisbane, Australia)

Upper House is a multi-residential tower in South Brisbane, delivering 188 apartments in an organic form inspired by the Daintree Rainforest. It offers a new quality of urban life, where connection to nature, resident wellbeing and environmental sustainability align in one expressive form.

The architecture celebrates Brisbane's natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle, punctuating the skyline with a timber pergola and biodiverse tropical planting. It presented a chance to reflect on the present and offer a new vision for the future of city living.

Landmark by Lexus
Pavilion | Melbourne, Australia
2023

The modular, three-storey pavilion, covered in native foliage and flowers, was the first of its kind at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia. ‘Landmark by Lexus’ was the first venue to achieve carbon neutral certification within the ‘Flemington Birdcage’ – a precinct that attracts tens of thousands of guests during the Melbourne Cup Carnival each year.

“We want to draw attention to the importance of naturalising our cities. Reintroducing trees and plants to man-made environments can combat many of the problems we face today. Restoring nature can reduce inner-city temperatures, increase biodiversity and significantly reduce our stress levels at the same time. Each of these benefits alone make a strong case for the widespread adoption of greening.” Koichi Takada.

Guests were encouraged to interact with the façade plantings, which included edible natives. These interactive culinary moments were curated for guests, with the idea that they could pluck directly from the plantings to activate the senses. By increasing interaction and immersing the guests in this pavilion rich with sensorial pleasures – the enjoyment lingers long after last drinks have been poured. And with it, lingers the message of the importance of returning nature to our cities.

Landmark by Lexus | Melbourne, Australia

The temporary pavilion for Lexus Australia makes a bold statement about the power of nature. ‘Landmark by Lexus’ showcased Australian flora in 2023 with the installation of over 1,000 native plants.

The durable, modular design allows for the façade to be adapted and reused time after time for a truly sustainable offering.

Prefabricated awnings interlock with the modular framework, add natural curves that softened the gridded structure and support mass planting, which literally brought the façade to life.

“With Landmark by Lexus, we started by designing the experience – considering how to deliver multi-sensory architecture that would activate and engage guests for a truly memorable encounter.” Koichi Takada.

Skye | North Sydney, Australia

Vertical expression of Skye's facade helps to break down the building's mass and contrasts to the horizontality of commercial buildings that dominate the urban neighbourhood. By diving the building into three elements, the facade optimises solar access and facilitates natural ventilation while balancing privacy. A raised podium allows for a through-site link, activated by restaurants and retail spaces that cater to both the public and residents.

Cave Restaurant (2009)
Sydney, Australia

Looking back on Koichi Takada Architects' debut project. A sushi restaurant where an emphasis on acoustic comfort drove the solution.

Made up of a succession of curves that overlap and develop through the space, this design is both innovative and closely connected to nature, in true expression of our guiding principles.

"We experimented with noise levels in relation to the comfort of dining and the ambience a cave-like environment can create." Timber profiles were pieced together in continuous curves, generating an ambient atmosphere that allows for intimate dining conversation.
