After our last post, we've had heaps of people installing ceiling fans to run alongside their air con and cut their summer power bills.
But here's something that surprises almost everyone we tell. That ceiling fan you put in to get through summer? It can keep you warmer in winter too.
Most people think a fan is a summer only thing. You switch it on when it's hot, you forget about it when it's cold. But there's a reverse setting on almost every ceiling fan, and it's one of the most overlooked features in the house.
Warm air rises. So in winter, while you're sitting on the couch feeling the chill, a good chunk of the warm air from your heater is sitting uselessly up near the ceiling. You're paying to heat it and getting none of the benefit.
Run the fan in reverse, on low, and it gently pushes that warm air back down the walls and into the room where you actually are. No cold draught, just the warmth you've already paid for finally reaching you. It means you can ease off the heater the same way fans let you ease off the air con in summer.
So that fan isn't just a summer purchase that sits idle half the year. Set up properly, it's working for you in the depths of winter too.
Most people have no idea their fan can even do this, which is a shame, because it's free comfort they already own.
If you're thinking about getting fans in before summer, it's worth knowing they'll earn their keep long after the heat's gone. Give me a call and we'll work out the right setup for your place.
