When drilling in complex environments, there are no second chances.
At the Elgas Cavern facility in Port Botany, Legion Drilling Sydney team was engaged to install seismic monitoring bores that will help detect ground movement and support the ongoing safety of critical infrastructure.
The project presented several technical challenges, including drilling through 30 to 40 metres of tidal sands before reaching rock, maintaining borehole stability, and managing the risks associated with working adjacent to LPG storage infrastructure.
Using rotary mud drilling methods, our team advanced each bore to competent rock, seated and and pressure-cemented steel casing for the addition of with an annular bag diverter at surface for gas and fluid control After cementing has been pressure tested the crew will drill through the cementing out he casing to a final depth of 95 metres. Every stage required precise ex*****on to protect bore integrity and avoid costly delays or rework.
To support safe operations, robust contingency measures were implemented, including gas management systems and annular diverter controls designed to manage any potential gas ingress encountered during drilling.
Projects like this demonstrate the value of experienced crews, detailed planning, and the ability to adapt to challenging ground conditions while maintaining safety, quality, and program certainty.
