Happy Friday! Another throw back project from 2014 – The Nirimba Educational Precinct which was designed for the University of Wester Sydney. The objectives for this project were to explore and develop innovative and integrated design solutions in response to WSU’s key themes of learning, collaboration, inspiration, sustainability, transformation, and community. JDH Architects worked closely with the client and end-user group to understand the space’s learning needs, including a diverse sector from the wider learning community.

Designed as the University’s first 5 Star Green Star Building, this teaching facility includes 18 flexible learning spaces, a 450-seat public lecture theatre and communal space for working, learning and gathering.

Project Feature: St Therese Early Learning Centre

Conceived from inception as the “third teacher”, the building and its external areas have been designed to support the social, physical, and intellectual development of children aged 2-6. The learning spaces are designed to enable not just the presentation of concepts in multiple forms, but also the development and iteration of these concepts over time.

The natural light is a strong architectural aspect of the ELC. Glazing throughout the building provides a soft osmosis between the spaces, where visibility and transparency allow for a sense of community and connection to each other.

St. Therese Early Learning Centre has been designed by JDH not just to meet the specific pedagogical criteria for early learning, but also as a place for discovery and delight. This is a place for both learning and community.

Project Feature: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College

Completed in 2013, JDH Architects award-winning design delivers a unique learning environment that identifies with the learning style of the next generation, re-shaping our thinking about how school buildings can be used to actively promote better learning and prepare students for future work environments. In a highly successful collaboration between JDH, the College and the wider community, our team led all parties on an outstanding journey to deliver a truly multi-purpose building.

Some key innovations of the design include the roof-top terrace and play areas that also act as outdoor classroom spaces, with the patterns in the paving and walls being used as teaching tools.

At JDH Architects we believe that the landscape for learning is shifting. In order to understand school design issues, we must first understand the educational and pedagogical agenda of the school. Therefore, the challenge of delivering these projects is greatly more than the designing of an educational facility. Every School is different in relation to its demographics and educational principles and it is essential that appropriate consultation processes occur with the staff and students of each school.
