I didn't understand how important biophilic design could be until I was the person who needed it.

When I was in a trauma centre, my nervous system was already overwhelmed. And suddenly the environment around me mattered enormously.

Whether I felt exposed or protected or any connection to nature or anything that helped my body feel like it could come down from high alert.

One day it might be you in ICU. It might be you walking into a crisis centre at the worst moment of your life.

It might be someone you love sitting in a hospital room frightened and overwhelmed.

Don't wait until you're the person in that room to realise how much the room matters.

We have an opportunity to think about these environments differently now.

Not simply: Is it functional? Is it compliant? Does it look good?

But:

What is this space asking of a nervous system that's already in meltdown?

That's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about neurobiophilic design.

Because sometimes the people who most need thoughtful design are the people with the least capacity to tolerate an environment that gets it wrong.

MORE GLASS DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN MORE
CONNECTION TO NATURE.

I want to know what it's like to be in that building on a s**tty Tuesday three years later.

That's the part of design I'm interested in.

A school isn't experienced once.

Neither is a hospital, a workplace, crisis accommodation or a community building.

People live with our design decisions.

Every. Single. Day.

Look at my case study on Biophilic Design. 🌿

This is what happens when we stop thinking about design as simply making a space look good…

…and start asking what the space is doing for the people inside it.

In this case study, I’m sharing what I discovered, what changed, and why it matters.

Watch the reel to see the full story.

Because the future of design isn’t just about how spaces look.

It’s about how they help us live.

Recently, I travelled to the University of Oxford to speak at the World Leaders Summit – Oxford 2026, where I received an award for Neuro-Biophilic Innovation.

Pretty bloody amazing.

But what nobody knew was that receiving the award wasn't actually the biggest achievement for me.

Getting there was.

I had a massive fear of travelling overseas on my own.

And this time, I challenged myself to do it.

I got on the plane.

I navigated my way across the other side of the world.

I stood on that stage at Oxford.

And I DID IT!!!

It made me think about the questions we ask ourselves when we're standing on the edge of something that scares the s**t out of us.

What if I actually did it?

What if I stopped waiting until I felt ready?

What if I made the bolder move?

What might be waiting for me on the other side of that fear?

Sometimes the achievement everyone sees isn't actually the achievement that changes you.

I went to Oxford to speak and receive an award.

I came home knowing I could do things I'd previously convinced myself I couldn't.

So maybe the question isn't "Am I scared?"

Maybe it's:
"What could happen if I did it anyway?"

WHICH CHAIR DO YOU CHOOSE?

You walk into a restaurant. There are two seats available.

One leaves you exposed to the room. The other gives you a clear view of what's happening while your back is protected.

Which one do you choose?

For many of us, it's the second.

There is a biophilic design principle behind this called prospect and refuge.

Prospect is our ability to see and understand what is happening around us.

Refuge is the feeling of being protected while we do it.

It's a relationship we see repeatedly in nature places that provide shelter without completely removing our view of the surrounding environment.

And our brains still respond to these spatial conditions.

This becomes particularly important when we're designing environments where people may already be experiencing heightened stress — healthcare, crisis accommodation, community facilities and other trauma-informed settings.

We can specify beautiful materials and resolve every functional requirement on the brief.

But we should also be asking:
What is this spatial configuration communicating to the nervous system?
Can I see what's around me?
Do I feel exposed?

Is there somewhere I can retreat without becoming completely isolated?

Good design isn't only about what a space looks like.

Sometimes it's understanding why someone chooses one chair over another without even knowing why.

WHY LONG-TERM OCCUPANCY CHANGES THE ROI CONVERSATION

I'm actually less interested in the quick build-and-sell model.

Why?

I want to know what happens after everyone goes home from the opening.

Take a school.

That building might be there for 50 years.

Think about how many children will sit in those classrooms. How many teachers will work there. How many hours of learning will happen inside those walls.

Now the design decisions start to look very different.

The same goes for hospitals, government buildings, crisis accommodation and long-term commercial spaces. These aren't buildings people pass through once. They're places people return to again and again.

When someone asks me about the ROI of biophilic design, I'm interested in the long game.

What happens when a better environment is experienced by thousands of people, over thousands of days?

That's a far more interesting calculation to me.

The real return on a building doesn't stop when construction does.

"WHAT IF WE STOPPED MEASURING A BUILDING ONLY BY WHAT IT COSTS TO BUILD?"

We already assess buildings through metrics such as energy performance, material selection, operational efficiency, lifecycle costs and commercial outcomes.

There is another performance layer I believe deserves greater consideration:
Human performance.

Can the project deliver stronger biodiversity and ecological outcomes alongside its human and commercial objectives?

This is where I see neurobiophilic design sitting within the broader design process. Not as an aesthetic overlay. As another evidence-informed lens through which we can interrogate design decisions.

How effectively does it enable the people, communities and ecosystems connected to it to perform?

When my life was failing…
I started to see my environment differently.

What if the spaces around us can either support us or add to the load we’re already carrying?

In this reel, I share a little of my own experience and what I discovered about the connection between our environment and our wellbeing.

It’s something I wish I’d understood much earlier.

Watch the reel to hear the story. 🌿
