Bronte. A flush door jamb, no architrave.

Invizi frame set flush to the wall and the plasterboard finished to the edge, so the line runs clean from floor to head.

Paddington terrace. A barn door was on the drawing, and the space didn’t suit it.

It became a cavity slider, framed in hardwood now before the plaster hides it. Flagged as a variation, priced, and chosen with the client.

Paddington terrace. The floor was out from the front door to the back.

Lasered end to end, then levelled, because tiles and flooring go down flat or they don’t go down at all.

Paddington terrace renovation. Mick, site foreman, walks the job before the linings go on.

Second coat of waterproofing on, services roughed in behind the walls, and the wet-area walls packed out square.

Paddington terrace, wet areas. Old walls are rarely square.

The walls are packed out true before the linings go on, so the tiler starts from a straight wall and a square corner, and the tile set-out works from the first row.

This is what’s under every tile we lay -  the corners, the floor-to-wall junctions, and why it gets two coats.

Every fixing through a waterproofed deck is a potential leak.

Each one fixed in the right sequence, so nothing goes through the membrane that shouldn’t.

Paddington. Mick, our foreman, on the wet-area walls before the tiler starts.

Walls in an old house are rarely square. The studs bow and sit at different depths, so we pack them out with thin shims behind the sheeting until the whole wall sits flat.

Then the straightedge goes across it, corner to corner and end to end.

The set-out goes on in pencil, in millimetres, so every fitting lands where the drawing puts it.

It’s why the tile sits flush and the grout lines run straight. A kitchen and bathroom renovation in the Eastern Suburbs.
