A straight partition would have divided these rooms just as well. The curve does something a straight wall cannot, it turns rather than stops, so the main space keeps a continuous edge instead of meeting a corner.

Above it sits high level glazing, running the length of the curve.

The bedroom was the original kitchen, so it holds onto those windows. The glazing lets that light travel over the top of the wall, across the timber ceiling, and carry into the centre of the apartment where it is needed most.

The wall divides the apartment. The light is what stops it feeling divided.

One of the first questions we ask is who the house is actually for. The answer is a stranger more often than anyone expects.

If you’re weighing up a renovation and want someone to look across the whole thing before you commit, consultations are open.

Robust enough to last the seasons, soft enough that somebody wants to stay.

The material palette for Neewalla was driven by a brief for longevity, speaking to the existing tones as well as echoing the surrounding landscape.

Spotted gum, brushbox veneer, grey speckled granite, stainless steel, a touch of blue.

Tactile and warm, balanced against something icier.

Swipe to see how the stainless steel is wearing in after three seasons of use.

The ground floor slab was completed last week, a key moment in the project as everything else in the house gets built off of this.

First, the timber and formwork shape the outline of the exact footprint of the house. A network of steel reinforcement is woven together, suspended throughout the outline of what is to come. Then came the pour, concrete filling that shape until it could hold itself.

Finally the formwork is stripped, the timber coming away to reveal the slab on its own for the first time.

Most of it disappears from here, floors go down, walls go up over it. Everything that goes up from here traces back to it, every wall line, every room, set out from this.

In a way, the part carrying the most weight is usually the part you forget is even there.

It’s fantastic to see our project ‘Astor, and so it becomes a Dance’ featured in The Design Files, a publication we’ve long admired. Thanks so much to Lucy Feagins and the Design Files team for seeing and appreciating the ambitions of this project.

For us, the design was about achieving a balance between restoration and ease, breathing life into a tired apartment.

From the article:

“The project name ‘Astor, and so it becomes a dance’ is both a reference to this balance and the name of the Mosman building.

‘The idea of the “dance” is rooted in the dialogue that forms between the existing building and the new interventions,’ says Michelle.

‘Each design move is informed by an observation of the existing, a gesture picked up on and reflected back into the home. There becomes a rhythm that forms between the old and the new, a balance of opportunities for restoration, for framing and for juxtaposition. It all amounts into something that we can only describe as a dance.’”

At Seaways, building on sand comes with its own challenges.

After the clearing of an overgrown site, the necessary work to get to the ground floor slab can begin. Piles are used to reach down to ground of adequate bearing capacity to support the building’s structure.

This change from vacant lot to construction site is also the first moment when the home starts to be made physical. The piles reveal the layout, the rhythm of the home, showing a vision of things to come.

The first footprints. An exciting moment.

We recently revisited the first project we completed as a studio.

The brief sounded simple. Upgrade a communal kitchen for a ski lodge. But the old u-shaped layout left everyone facing away from each other. Cooking dinner, side by side, never quite together.

Widening the space and placing something in the centre changed that. Once there was an island, there was a reason to face each other. The kitchen stopped being a row of tasks. It became somewhere to gather.

Coming back now, making coffee, watching the mountain, there is something rare about inhabiting a space you designed.

It is compelling watching an idea become physical.

It is more wonderful watching people fill it with their own rituals, making it a home, if only for a few days.

The original ceiling in this apartment was vermiculite, the kind people usually plaster straight over and forget about. We opted for a material that works harder to achieve more for the space: a timber lining board ceiling, lower and warmer, designed to reflect light throughout the space rather than disappear into it. It references the material palette of the building’s era — the 1960s weren’t afraid of timber on a ceiling — while changing the atmosphere of the room entirely. All the while, the original vermiculite ceiling with its insulative capabilities is left in place, to do what it does well.

If something’s still doing its job, there’s no need to remove it. You just build forward from there.

Avenue is moving. More to come.

Astor, and so it becomes a Dance

Joinery elements are integrated into existing openings imbuing
these spaces with additional function. The extent and proportion of joinery is carefully considered to reframe rooms, maintaining a calm backdrop that celebrates the period details.

Restored historic elements are framed and celebrated,
breathing new life into the key features of the home.
