The Local Plug The Local Plug is a Sydney-based electrical business specialising in electrical maintenance work for residential, commercial, strata and real estate clients.

It began with two mates with a strong desire to change the image of tradies and provide exceptional service. Teaching the apprentice… or just reminding Seb that he knows absolutely nothing? 😂⚡

Today, Seb is getting some hands-on experience with a switchboard upgrade — and a very important lesson along the way:

🏷️ Label everything.
❌ No guessing.
⚡ Know exactly where everything goes.

Simple enough, right?

Well… Seb is still learning. 😂

And while he's gaining experience and working his way towards doing more on his own, David has his own opinion on when Seb will finally be ready.

Another 30 years should do it. 😭

At this point, we’re starting to think Seb isn’t being trained to become an electrician… he’s being trained to live up to David’s ongoing belief that he is, and always will be, a constant disappointment. 😂

Of course, if you know David, you know this is just part of his ongoing tradition of finding new ways to remind Seb that he’s a disappointment. 😅

Sometimes upgrading to three-phase power means fixing a problem you didn’t know you had. ⚡

This switchboard already had safety switches in place, so you might think it was ready for the upgrade. Not quite. 👀

The existing equipment was positioned right in the middle of the board, leaving nowhere for the new three-phase meter to go.

So before the power could go from single-phase to three-phase, the board itself needed a rethink.

The solution? Relocate the existing equipment, clear the required space, and make room for the new three-phase meter.

And the frustrating part?

If the original equipment had simply been positioned a little higher or lower, the homeowner may never have needed this extra work in the first place. 😬

A small detail when a switchboard is installed can become a very expensive inconvenience later.

Not every garage is EV-charger ready...
but that's where a good plan comes in. ⚡🚗

This one came with a little challenge: a single brick wall with no cavity, meaning there was no easy path to run the cabling.

So the team drilled through, did the necessary conduit work, ran the cable back to the switchboard, and got the DeWalt Compact EV Charger mounted neatly on the garage.

And, of course, Seb's contribution came with the usual encouragement from David:

"You're a constant disappointment." 😂

Despite the emotional damage, Seb survived, the conduit work looks clean, and the charger is in and ready to go.

Today we're giving this sub-board a serious refresh, with new Hager safety switches and surge protection to bring the electrical system up to date.

The old setup is coming out, the new sub-circuits are going in, and naturally... the weather decided to join the job. 😂 But a little rain isn't stopping this upgrade - no Sir!. 🌧️⚡

So while the team gets stuck into the board, David's got one more thing to worry about:

Will the electrician finish the job before the rain does? ☔

With the cables through and the new safety switches going in, we're well on the way.

And yes... there was also a ceiling fan upgrade happening inside.

Because apparently one job at a time would be too easy. 😄

Apparently, asking for a day off is a sackable offence. 😂

Seb had one simple request:

A day off to take his girlfriend to the Easter Show. 🎡

Seems reasonable, right? Not according to David.

One minute Seb is the apprentice... the next, he's apparently getting replaced. 😭

We have a feeling David might be slightly dramatic.

This pergola had lights... but it also had a few surprises hiding in the wiring. 😬

The existing cables had been run exposed, the circuit was short-circuiting, and some of the previous wiring definitely wasn't something we were comfortable reconnecting.

So rather than patching up the old setup, we went back to the switchboard and started fresh.

New wiring.
New switch.
New power point.
Two new LED lights.

And, of course, the usual David & Seb banter along the way. 😂

The result?
A pergola that's not only brighter, but wired properly and ready to be enjoyed again.

We asked David to reveal something nobody knows about him...

We expected a hidden talent.
Maybe an embarrassing hobby.

Instead, we got a full employment history... and a confession that he still thinks about KFC every single day. 🍗😂

From working at a frozen yoghurt shop to washing cars and flipping chicken, David's had a few jobs before becoming the electrician everyone knows today.

One thing clearly hasn't changed though...

His love for KFC. (He's just trying very hard not to eat it.)

Sometimes, the job you think you need... isn't the job you actually need. 👀

This homeowner originally called The Local Plug to replace a few switches, install new lighting, and add ceiling fans.

Simple enough... or so everyone thought.

Once the switches came off, David discovered the apartment was wired with an outdated smart system that wasn't compatible with the upgrades the homeowner wanted.

Suddenly, a straightforward lighting project became a full apartment rewire.

It's a great reminder that until an electrician looks behind the switch plate or inside the ceiling, there's no way of knowing exactly what you're working with.

Sometimes the biggest discoveries are hidden behind the smallest jobs.
