G8 Energy was honoured to take part in the 2026 First Nations Clean Energy Symposium on Wadawurrung Country, Djilang (Geelong).

This is Australia's only First Nations-led national clean energy event, where Traditional Owners, community leaders, investors and policymakers meet as partners. The focus was on equity and co-ownership pathways, benefit-sharing frameworks, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent in practice. We came away with a sharper sense of what responsible development and meaningful partnership actually require.

Hearing AI reframed as Ancestral Intelligence, the knowledge held and passed down on Country, was a good reminder of whose expertise should be shaping this transition.

Australia connected a record 9.1GW of new generation and storage in FY26. More than double the year before.

The number buried further down the same AEMO scorecard is the one worth reading twice.

Median time in the proponent implementation stage rose from 14 months to 18 months. A third of projects have now sat in that stage for more than two years.

That stage is not controlled by the regulator. It is controlled by the developer. AEMO points to design changes, equipment substitutions, project sales and extended financing as the main causes.

So the pipeline is not short of ambition. It now sits at 75.4GW, up 42% in a year, with batteries making up 52% of it. What it is short of is projects that were developed properly the first time.

At G8 Energy, that is the whole reason we exist. We work at the front end: securing well-located sites in regional Australia, negotiating land agreements, and progressing planning and grid approvals before a project ever reaches an investment committee. The result is a Ready-to-Build asset with the risk already taken out of it, not a set of assumptions someone else has to test.

AEMO's latest quarterly data confirms what those of us working in the sector have been watching build for some time. Australia's grid-scale storage transition has moved from forecast to fact.

Standalone batteries now account for 33.2 GW of the NEM connections pipeline, up 62% in twelve months. That's roughly half of everything in the queue. Installed capacity has doubled in a year to more than 8 GW. And in the March quarter, batteries set the price in 32% of trading intervals, overtaking hydro as the most frequent price-setting technology in the market.

Renewables supplied 46.5% of NEM generation over the same period, a record for a first quarter.

The conclusion is straightforward. Storage is no longer the missing piece of the energy transition. It's the asset class doing the heaviest lifting.

But a pipeline is not a fleet. AEMO's own commentary points to projects stalling in the implementation phase on funding, connection and design issues. The distance between what's proposed and what actually reaches full output is where value will be won or lost over the next five years.
