At Home with the Architect in July // We are opening the Two Sisters Home, a thoughtful reimagining of a Californian bungalow by Mark Szczerbicki Design Studio.

This project balances preservation with play.
Retaining the home’s heritage charm, the design leads into a layered, contemporary extension. As an enduring home for a ceramic artist and her family, it includes a ceramic studio and art-filled interiors. The clients sought a home that retained its bungalow charm and respected its suburban roots, while incorporating a flexible, gallery-like living space and accommodating family needs. In response, the architectural language creates a deliberate journey exploring thresholds and connections. Walking through the heritage front into the rear addition evokes a feeling of discovering a secret suburban art gallery.

Robust materials like brick flooring, concrete, and aluminium cladding offer longevity, while the textured surfaces of the furniture, art and bold colour moments bring warmth and whimsy. Careful attention was given to sightlines and spatial transitions, while still serving the practical needs of family life.

The house is at once gallery, studio, and sanctuary, where thoughtfully designed spaces and nuanced interiors hold space for extraordinary artworks. Embracing both creativity and family, it is a home not just built to last, but to evolve.

Sydney City Walk // Sat 14th March

Meet James (first on the left) … he’s an award-winning architect and AAA tour leader extraordinaire.

James will be leading tomorrow’s Sydney City Walk where we discover some of the city’s architectural masterpieces including the amazing Quay Quarter Tower.

We’ll start at Custom House and for the next 2 hours at a leisurely pace, James will guide you through the evolution of the harbour city. From architect Harry Seidler’s iconic Australia Square tower that dominated the cityscape in 1967 to the stunning new Quay Quarter Tower and the Sydney Place Precinct. The tour also explores some of Sydney’s skyscrapers, including the 6-green-star rated No.1 Bligh Street.
Learn about the ingenious excavation beneath the Botanic Gardens to provide more classrooms for the Conservatorium of Music.
Hear about Quay Quarter Sydney which comprises the Quay Quarter Tower and enjoy seeing the amazing installations in the boutique Quay Quarter Lanes, which form a rejuvenated Sydney precinct.

An invigorating walk for visitors and Sydney-siders alike!

invites you to explore Overleaf House designed by Bijl Architecture on Sunday 1st March.

Located in the Willoughby East heritage conservation area, the design has transformed the original 10year old cottage while retaining its most valuable features. Entry and circulation are completely reconsidered, providing the opportunity for new proportions and spatial arrangements within the building enveloped afforded by the strict planning controls.
The renewed landscape is a significant in the reimagining of the house, designed and executed by the client, a horticulturalist by training.
Overleaf House ably demonstrates that a low carbon approach to building – retaining/reusing existing building fabric, putting passive design and mindful building size to the fore, specifying materials with a low life cycle cost, installing energy efficient systems, and embracing ‘loose fit’ design principles, can readily produce a flexible, expressive and heritage friendly design response.

ABOUT BIJL ARCHITECTURE
was established in 2012 by architect (and Associate Professor) Melonie Bayl-Smith and is the recipient of numerous architecture and construction industry awards.
The practice has worked on a variety of projects including work across residential, interiors, commercial and public sectors, with a focus on a collaborative approach to each project working closely with clients, consultants and builders.
The practice’s design philosophy identifies that inherent flexibility and intentional longevity are key to creating sustainable architecture, from the viewpoints of aesthetics, functionality, economy, and the total environment.
