In the gardens we create, time slows down — and this is not accidental.

Landscape architecture can influence not only what we see, but how we experience a space.

Inside this grotto, the garden is deliberately revealed in fragments. Dark rock surrounds you, while openings frame selected views towards the landscape outside. Falling water creates another layer between you and the garden — you are looking at the landscape through a moving curtain of water.

The contrast between darkness and light, enclosure and openness, stillness and movement changes the way the eye reads the space. Instead of seeing the entire garden at once, you discover it gradually.

The sound of falling water further separates you from the outside world and draws your attention into the immediate moment.

This is how a garden becomes more than a view. It becomes an experience — one in which time seems to slow down.

How do you create a sense of depth in a garden?

Working with garden space is very similar to creating a composition in a painting.

There is a foreground, a main composition and a background. The difference is that we are not creating them on a flat surface — we are working with real, three-dimensional space.

In this garden, rounded plant forms create the foreground. The eye then moves towards the main composition and finally to the vertical lines of the trees in the background.

These layers create perspective. Your eye travels through the garden rather than immediately reaching its boundary, making the space feel deeper and more expansive.

If there were simply a lawn in the foreground with trees planted along the fence, the eye would immediately read the boundary of the property. Even a relatively large garden could visually feel smaller and flatter.

This is why landscape design is not only about what we plant and where. It is also about how we shape the way you experience and perceive the space.

Sometimes, creating a sense of space is not about having more space — it is about knowing how to work with the space you already have.

We love using one of the most beautiful principles of Japanese garden design: creating a garden as a sequence of living landscape scenes.

As you move through the space, every turn reveals a new composition. Every view is carefully considered, inviting you to slow down, pause, and simply enjoy the moment.

We believe this is where the true value of a garden begins — not only in how it looks, but in how it makes you feel.

This is one of our gardens, created with exactly this philosophy in mind.

Every garden tells a story.

In this Japanese-inspired garden, every element has a purpose.

The green arch gently separates one scene from another. A winding path slows your pace and encourages exploration. Rolling hills create depth, while large natural boulders shape the landscape and make it feel timeless. The pond reflects both the sky and the architecture, expanding the space visually. Islands, emerging stones, and vibrant Japanese maples become focal points that guide your eye through the garden.

Rather than simply arranging plants and materials, we compose landscapes as a sequence of living scenes—spaces that reveal themselves gradually as you walk through them.

This is the philosophy behind every garden we create at Kostya Udin Landscape Design Studio.

A terrace is another room in your home. Just under the open sky.

Even a compact outdoor space can feel completely different when it’s designed as one cohesive environment.

For this project, we divided the terrace into a series of living zones:
• a quiet corner to relax surrounded by greenery;
• a garden composition that becomes a living view from inside the home;
• a bar area overlooking the city skyline;
• carefully positioned planting that creates privacy without making the space feel enclosed.

Each zone has its own purpose, but together they create a place where you naturally want to spend your time.

Our approach isn’t about placing plants or outdoor furniture. It’s about creating a composition where architecture, landscape and everyday living work together.

That’s why even a compact terrace can feel like a complete garden.
