🔨 Tony’s place — Strathfield. Aluminium frame going in.

This is the part nobody sees — but it’s everything.

We’re building over a retained section of the backyard. The goal? One seamless level deck where there used to be a split-level headache.

Here’s what’s going in 👇

🔨 Tony’s place — Strathfield. And this one was a proper head-scratcher. 🧠

See that retaining section out the back? Most blokes would’ve scratched their noggin, shrugged, and said “too hard mate.”

Not us. 😏

The challenge here was building an aluminium frame OVER a retained section of the backyard — turning what was basically a split-level problem into one seamless, flat, usable outdoor space. No steps, no drop, no awkward level change. Just one beautiful continuous deck that flows like it was always meant to be there.

Here’s what made it interesting 👇

📐 Levelling was a genuine challenge — getting the frame perfectly level over a retained section requires more than a spirit level and a prayer. Every post height calculated, every bearer sitting true

🚪 Built-in hatch — because access underneath matters and we don’t brick things up and hope for the best

And on top of all that? Woodvance Ultra Ash Grey composite boards. Clean, modern, zero maintenance. Looks like it belongs in a magazine.

Tony’s backyard went from a split-level headache to the best room in the house — and it’s outside. 😄

😳 This is what was holding up someone’s deck.

A paver. A bit of rotten timber. And a whole lotta hope. 🙏

Stone the flamin’ crows.

The spans were too long, the quickset was poured straight onto dirt, and — hand on heart — the decking boards were literally holding the whole structure together.

Not the bearers. The boards. 🤦

That’s not a deck mate. That’s a prayer with screws in it. 😂

Paul called us in. We fixed it properly. Code compliant, solid footings, correct spans — done once, done right.

😳 Mate. Just… mate.

See that photo? That right there is what was holding up someone’s deck.

A paver. A tiny bit of rotten timber. And what I can only describe as blind optimism. 🙏

When we pulled the boards off Paul’s deck in Marsfield — stone the flamin’ crows — here’s what we found underneath 👇

🧱 Footings sitting on pavers on bare dirt — not concreted in, not set properly, just… resting there like they were having a little lie down

💀 Where they DID put concrete in — brittle quickset poured straight onto dirt with one bracket. One. Mate I’ve seen stronger sandcastles at Manly Beach

📏 Spans across the bearers were way too long — the frame had absolutely no business holding up anything heavier than a budgie

🤯 And here’s the kicker — the decking boards themselves were literally holding the whole structure together. Not the bearers. Not the footings. The BOARDS on top.

That deck wasn’t built. It was just sort of… suggested. 😂

The bloke who put this together had a good crack but mate — a deck is a structural build. It’s governed by the timber framing code for a reason. You can’t just rest it on a paver and hope she’ll be right.

She won’t be right. She never is. 🚨

Paul’s sorted now. Proper footings, proper bearers, proper spans, done to code. Solid as a rock and going nowhere for the next 25 years.

How deep is this footing?

🔨 Small deck. Big headaches. Sorted like a boss. 😏

Marsfield unit at the back — and mate, this one was more complicated than a tax return written in Mandarin. 🤯

Here’s what we were dealing with 👇

😅 Tight access — had to organise with strata to hold a car park for a whole week just to get materials in. Try doing that without upsetting the body corporate. Diplomacy skills of a UN negotiator required. 🕊

🛡️ Full property protection laid down throughout — because we treat every property like it’s our mum’s place. Not a scratch, not a mark, nothing.

❄️ Air conditioning unit needed a proper home — so we built out a dedicated platform support for it. No bodgy brackets, no she’ll-be-right. Done properly with full structural support underneath.

📐 Previous deck spacing was rougher than a gravel driveway — so we added two extra H4 treated bearers to bring the spans back to where they should’ve been from day one

And at the end of it all — that Woodvance composite laid down smooth as butter on a hot pikelet. 🧈

Look at her. Clean as a whistle. Tight as a drum.

This is what happens when you send qualified blokes into a tricky job instead of hoping for the best like a galah buying scratchies. 😂

Small deck. But not a single corner cut.

Never is. 😏
