the 8 most googled electrical questions this winter (and what to actually do about them)
ranked by what sydney is actually searching. research-backed, not invented. by richard from stern’s electrical, bondi.
1. “why does my safety switch keep tripping?”
this is the big one. safety switches (rcds) trip when they detect current leaking somewhere it shouldn’t: to earth, through water, through a damaged cable, or through a faulty appliance.
common causes:
a dodgy appliance such as a kettle, toaster, heater, or hair dryer
moisture in an outdoor power point or light fitting
water getting into the roof space after rain
damaged or old wiring in the walls
a circuit overloaded with too many high-draw devices
the 30-second test:
unplug everything on the affected circuit
reset the switch
plug things back in one at a time
the culprit is whatever trips it again
if it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is probably in the wiring. call me now on 0412 164 461 and stop resetting it.
2. “what’s the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?”
circuit breaker: protects the wiring from overload
safety switch (rcd): protects you from electric shock by detecting earth leakage
modern switchboards have both. older ones often only have breakers. quick rule: if your switchboard doesn’t have a “test” button on each safety switch, it’s probably due an upgrade. call me now on 0412 164 461 if you’re unsure about your setup.
3. “why are my lights flickering?”
common causes include:
a loose bulb
a failing switch or dimmer
a loose connection in the ceiling rose
an overloaded circuit
a failing driver on an led downlight
bondi-specific: salt air can eat away at the contacts on outdoor fittings faster than inland suburbs. if it’s your porch or garage light, that’s one place to look.
there can also be another cause at night. in some situations, brief and predictable flickering in the evening or overnight can be related to network signalling used for controlled-load or off-peak systems. that is not automatically a fault, and it is not proof that a particular Ausgrid circuit is responsible. the timing, fittings, drivers, dimmers, and circuit all need to be checked properly.
we have different solutions depending on what is causing the flicker and what equipment is installed. call me now on 0412 164 461 and i’ll help work out what’s going on.
4. “can i do my own electrical work?”
short answer: no, not legally in nsw. electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.
you can change a like-for-like bulb, replace the plastic faceplate on a switch, and plug things in.
you can’t add a power point, replace a light fitting, touch the switchboard, or run new cabling yourself. just don’t.
5. “how often do smoke alarms need replacing?”
every 10 years. the sensor degrades, and there’s a date stamped on the back of every alarm. check yours this week.
if you’re renting, smoke-alarm obligations are generally the landlord’s responsibility. check the current NSW requirements for your property and have any electrical work completed by a licensed electrician.
6. “my power point is warm, sparking, or not working. is this urgent?”
yes. warm outlets, scorch marks, buzzing, or any spark need attention. don’t use the outlet. turn off the circuit at the switchboard if you can do so safely, and unplug anything still connected.
call me now on 0412 164 461 for help with an urgent electrical issue.
7. “how much does it cost to do x?”
honest answer: pricing varies. the number usually depends on:
access, including roof and switchboard access
parts, including standard or specialty fittings
time of day, especially after-hours work
scope, such as one point versus whole-of-house work
get a written quote and ask what is included.
8. “electrician near me”
this is one of the highest-intent searches in the trade. if you’re looking for an electrician, check reviews, check the licence, and ask whether they do the specific job you need.
when to call a sparky, not google
anything burning, sparking, or smoking
a switchboard over 25 years old
no safety switches
flickering lights after you change the bulb
a switch that trips with nothing plugged in
any renovation work
you’re just not sure what’s wrong
if the flicker is brief and happens at the same time every night, call me anyway. it may be a network-signalling or equipment-compatibility issue, but it needs to be checked rather than guessed at.
