$53 a week on power β€” but was the hot-water system really the culprit? πŸ”

This Sydney homeowner suspected an unusually hot storage tank and an ageing solar system. So we installed circuit-level monitoring for seven days to see exactly where the electricity was going.

The results helped separate the obvious suspects from the real drivers.

Your pool pump runs quietly in the background β€” which is exactly why it can quietly inflate your bill. 🏊

It's usually not the pump's power draw that's the problem. It's the schedule: how many hours it runs, whether that changes with the season, whether it lines up with your solar, and whether the timer is actually doing what you think. Run several hours a day at the wrong time and the weekly total adds up fast.

Switchboard-level data shows when the pool circuit actually runs β€” and whether a timer fault or peak-time operation is costing you.

An EV can be one of the biggest loads in your home β€” but it doesn't have to be one of the biggest bill drivers. πŸ”Œ

The savings aren't just in what you charge, but when. Charge on a flat tariff or during the evening peak out of habit, and you shift a big chunk of usage into the most expensive window. Charge in an off-peak window β€” or line it up with your rooftop solar β€” and the same kilometres cost far less.

The fix starts with your tariff, your charger, and what's actually flowing at the switchboard each week.

$160 a week on power? 😳 That's over $8,000 a year.

Our latest video breaks down exactly why this household's electricity bill climbed so high β€” and the common culprits we see driving up costs in Sydney homes.

Swapped your bulbs to LED and thought lighting was sorted? There's often more hiding in plain sight. πŸ’‘

Lighting is a modest ~4% of the average NSW home's usage β€” but the spread is wide. Forgotten halogens, lights left on all night, and poorly controlled circuits can quietly cost far more than they should. LEDs use about 75% less energy and last 5–10Γ— longer, so every halogen holdout is a real target.

The trick is finding them with data, not guesswork. Switchboard-level monitoring shows which circuits are still burning money β€” and where a small change pays off.

Your Sydney power bill went up in 2025-26 β€” but "the price went up" is rarely the whole story. πŸ“Š

From 1 July 2025 the Default Market Offer lifted NSW standing-offer prices by 8.3–9.7%. But a higher bill can also come from expired bill relief, usage that's crept up quietly, or a solar/battery/tariff setup that isn't working the way you think.

Generic tips β€” switch off lights, compare plans β€” help a little, but they don't tell you what's actually driving YOUR bill. Measured data does.

We monitor your switchboard for 7 days and show you exactly where the money's going.

Heating is the biggest driver of winter power bills in most Australian homes β€” and small habits make a big difference. πŸ”₯

A few degrees on the thermostat, heating only the rooms you're using (zoning), and sealing the gaps that leak warm air can all cut what you spend without making the house any colder.

Our new guide breaks down practical thermostat, zoning and insulation tips β€” plus how switchboard data shows which heating circuits are actually costing you.

Had a battery quote change after 1 May 2026? The rebate didn't disappear β€” it was recalculated. πŸ”‹

Under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the STC factor dropped from 8.4 to 6.8 for May–December 2026, and support is now tiered by usable capacity:

β€’ First 14 kWh β†’ full rate
β€’ 14–28 kWh β†’ 60% of the rate
β€’ 28–50 kWh β†’ 15% of the rate

Translation: oversized batteries now attract noticeably less subsidy. A 10 kWh system lost roughly $640 in support, and a 20 kWh system was hit harder still.

The takeaway for Sydney homes β€” right-sizing matters more than ever. Before you sign a quote, measure the evening load you're actually trying to cover instead of sizing off whatever's on special.

That's exactly what a PowerAudit does: 7 days of switchboard monitoring so your battery decision is based on real data, not guesswork.
