Sometimes making something look random takes a surprising amount of planning. For this Gymea Bay renovation, the brief was for the new first-floor balustrade to become an architectural feature of the façade. Working closely with the architect Newman Architect and client, we developed a custom aluminium design using four different picket widths in an intentionally irregular pattern across the 10m balcony. The concept might look simple on paper, but working out how to fabricate it while keeping the structure, welds and fixings out of sight was where things got interesting.
