AS A LIGHTING DESIGNER… 3 things I'd ALWAYS do when lighting a bedroom.

1. Add a decorative element
A beautiful pendant or wall sconces can bring personality, warmth and a sense of luxury to a bedroom. Lighting should complement the interiors and contribute to the overall atmosphere- not simply illuminate the space.

2. Get the bedside lighting right
Whether it's dedicated reading lights, wall-mounted fittings or table lamps, bedside lighting needs to be both functional and comfortable. Consider how each person uses the space, and ensure the lighting can be controlled independently without disturbing their partner.

3. Keep the colour temperature WARM
For bedrooms, I'd specify 3000K or warmer, ideally 2700K, for a soft, inviting ambience. Consistency across the fittings is important too- mixing different colour temperatures can disrupt the feeling of calm and cohesion.

The secret to beautiful bedroom lighting? A balance of decoration, function and warmth.

Because a bedroom should be somewhere you can't wait to retreat to at the end of the day.

FROM TABLEWARE TO LIGHTING- THE ART OF MAKING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.

MEET THE MAKER | STUDIO ENTI

There’s something particularly special about seeing where beautiful design begins.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting , delving into the world of Australian-made ceramic lighting and hearing founder Naomi Taplin's inspiring journey- from creating tableware to establishing a highly respected Sydney design studio.

We were fortunate to see the fittings being made, gaining a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, materiality and processes behind each piece.

We also explored Studio Enti's beautiful new showroom- a must-visit destination for architects and interior designers seeking inspiration.

But perhaps the greatest highlight was the fabulous exchange of ideas with Naomi and Ainsley. Conversations like these, where designers and makers share knowledge, explore possibilities and challenge thinking, are invaluable.

For us, understanding the people, processes and design intent behind the products we specify is an essential part of great lighting design.

A wonderful celebration of local design, craftsmanship and collaboration.

The best technology is the technology you never notice.

At our Woolwich project, the brief was to create a home that transported you somewhere else- a French Riviera-inspired escape where you could feel lost in time and perpetually on holiday.

Working closely with interior designer Liz Talbert and our wonderful clients, our role was to ensure the lighting supported that vision while quietly bringing the home technologically into the present.

Every detail was considered collaboratively- from the architectural and decorative lighting to integration, control and the way each space transitions from day into evening.

The result is lighting that feels warm, effortless and timeless. The technology is there when you need it, but never competes with the interiors, the materials or the atmosphere Liz so beautifully created.

Because in a home designed for escapism, you shouldn’t notice the technology.

You should simply feel transported.

Architects & interior designers- beautiful lighting starts with close collaboration. We’d love to work alongside you on your next project.

What if one light could be both precise and beautifully soft?

The newly released Lunelle introduces a beautiful new material language to the Delta Light collection, with a body crafted from translucent natural porcelain. Materials usually seen in decorative fittings is crossing into the architectural realm, and it’s beautiful!

Switch it on and two very different lighting effects emerge.

A precise beam of light delivers illumination exactly where it’s needed, while the porcelain itself comes alive- diffusing a soft, warm glow into the surrounding space.

For us, it’s a lovely example of where materiality, technology and quality of light come together- creating a fitting that is as much about atmosphere as it is function.

Thank you &

Beautiful stair lighting isn’t just about what you see- it’s about making sure you can see where you’re stepping.

AS A LIGHTING DESIGNER… 3 things I’d ALWAYS do when lighting stairs.

1. Light the staircase as a feature space
Consider the general illumination first. A pendant, wall sconces, or indirect architectural lighting can provide ambient light while also celebrating the form and volume of the staircase. Always being mindful of serviceability, if a globe or fitting requires repairing over stairs it’s a challenge!

2. Light the journey
Introduce lighting closer to the treads with recessed step lights, illuminated handrails or integrated LED within the stair detail. This provides guidance while adding another beautiful layer of light.

3. Be very careful with contrast
Lighting some treads while leaving others significantly darker can make changes in level harder to read- particularly for people with ageing vision.

The goal is visual clarity and consistency, so every step can be easily identified and navigated.

Great stair lighting should enhance the architecture, guide movement and make every step feel safe.

The best way to understand a light fitting? See it illuminated.

We recently visited Bloomingdales Lighting to explore their showroom and discover an incredible collection of decorative lighting from designers around the world.

A particular highlight was seeing the gorgeous new range by Leah Martin, Bloomingdales’ talented in-house designer- a wonderful example of local design sitting alongside an international collection.

For us, showroom visits are an important part of being a lighting designer. Seeing fittings illuminated allows us to understand their scale, materiality, finish and, most importantly, the quality and effect of the light they produce.

Because a beautiful fitting is only part of the equation- it also needs to create beautiful light.

If your guests have to search for your front door, your lighting isn’t doing its job.

AS A LIGHTING DESIGNER… 3 things I’d ALWAYS do when lighting the façade and entry to a home.

1. Make the street number visible
It sounds simple, but it matters. Your house number should be clearly illuminated after dark- for guests, deliveries and, importantly, emergency services.

2. Light the journey
Entry stairs, changes in level and pathways need considered lighting for guidance and safety. The aim isn’t to flood the path with light, but to gently lead people towards the entrance.

3. Create a welcoming front door
A well-positioned light at the front door acts as a visual destination, drawing guests towards the entry. It should also provide enough soft, flattering light for both guest and host when the door opens.

Good entry lighting doesn’t just illuminate your home- it shows people where to go, keeps them safe and makes them feel welcome when they arrive.

Last Thursday evening I had the pleasure of joining for a thoughtful panel discussion on the art of lighting stone with artificial light ✨
Alongside , , and , we explored how light can reveal texture, depth, and the quiet beauty within natural materials—transforming stone into something truly expressive after dark.
Grateful to be part of such an inspiring conversation and to share ideas with creatives who are just as passionate about the intersection of light, material, and design.
