Fault identified.

Thermal anomalies were evident at the bathroom entry threshold waterstop.
Controlled wetting of the shower ledge resulted in water ingress behind the wall tiling.
The water tracked down behind the tiled finish into the screed, then migrated beneath the bathroom floor tiling toward the bathroom entry.
Importantly, testing demonstrated that the bathroom entry waterstop had not failed.
The migrating water was visibly arrested on the bathroom side of the waterstop. As water continued to accumulate within the tiled floor assembly, it rose to the finished floor surface immediately in front of the waterstop.
Once sufficient water had accumulated, surface tension allowed the water to bridge over the top of the waterstop, resulting in water egress beyond the waterproofed wet-area boundary and onto the adjoining hallway flooring.

This provided a clear observable water path:
Shower ledge ingress → concealed migration behind the wall tiling → screed → bathroom floor assembly → water arrested at the entry waterstop → water rising to the surface → bridging over the waterstop → hallway flooring.

The waterstop itself remained effective in preventing subsurface migration beyond the bathroom threshold.

💰 A $1,300 SAVING, because the leak wasn’t where previous repairs assumed it was.

This customer initially contacted us for a complete shower regrout and reseal after previous repair attempts had failed to stop water escaping from the shower.

The shower had already received:
• Silicone around the shower screen, internally and externally
• Silicone to wall and floor tile junctions
• Grout sealer application

Yet the water egress continued.

There was also concern that visible cracking through the wall tiles could be fractures allowing water behind the tiled surface.

Rather than simply carrying out another full reseal, we investigated first.

Using thermal imaging, we checked for temperature anomalies and water-tracking patterns around the shower.

🔎 What did we find?

The visible cracking was consistent with superficial glazing crazing, rather than fractures through the tile body.

More importantly, the thermal investigation helped identify the likely water path around the bottom section of the shower screen and vertical channel junction.

When water flowed onto this area, it could track beneath the screen assembly and into the wall-to-floor junction, then migrate around the perimeter beneath the tiled surface and into available voids.

The shower didn’t need another $1,300 repair based on an incorrect assumption.

The customer paid for the thermal investigation only, we did not proceed with the unnecessary shower reseal, and he saved approximately $1,300.

💡 Sometimes the best repair is knowing what NOT to repair.

Before spending thousands replacing grout, silicone, tiles or waterproofing, identify the likely source and water path first.

AVOID! Using Paint Pens on Grout and Mould

It might look clean for a few weeks, but paint pens don’t fix the problem. They simply cover stained grout, trap moisture, and hide mould while water continues penetrating beneath the tiles.

If your shower is leaking, has mould returning, or the grout is deteriorating, the solution is not to paint over it. The failed grout needs to be properly prepared and replaced with the correct materials.

Don’t waste your time on a cosmetic cover up. Fix the cause, not the symptom.

The same shower featured in our floor regrouting timelapse. Here you can clearly see the tile joints after they have been machined and prepared to provide the depth and profile required for a long lasting epoxy grout bond.

You’ll also notice the fluorescent trace dye staining within the limestone. This residue was left behind by the plumber during a waterproofing flood test. While the dye confirms the testing process, porous natural stone such as limestone can absorb these pigments, making complete removal difficult.

Preparation is everything. A quality epoxy grout installation starts long before the grout is applied.
