By 1 January 2027, every Queensland home must have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms — hard-wired or fitted with a non-removable 10-year battery. Pressing "test" on an old ionisation alarm won't change that it's not up to standard.

The deadline is closer than you think. 🚨

By the 1st of January 2027, every Queensland home (owner-occupied, rental, or otherwise) must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.

Here's what that means for you:

🔥 Alarms must use photoelectric sensors (not the old ionisation type) and be interconnected. So when one goes off, they all go off
🔋 Alarms must be hard-wired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery
⏳ Alarms must be less than 10 years old — check the manufacture date on the back, as expired alarms don't meet compliance even if they still "test" fine
🛏️ Required in every bedroom, adjoining hallway, and on every level of the home

These changes came after Queensland strengthened its fire safety laws to improve detection, coverage, and response times. Especially overnight when fire risk and vulnerability are highest.
