October is National Safe Work Month, and this year's theme is "Safe work is for life."

We're starting it on World Mental Health Day for a reason. Safety on site isn't only about PPE and pressure tests. It's also about the crew who turn up tired after a long hospital job, or carrying something heavy from home, and still need to work with gas lines that patients will rely on.

So this month we're talking about all of it. What safe work looks like for our team, for the people using our systems, and for the families waiting for everyone to get home.

Check on your crew this weekend. A "you right?" goes a long way.

Before any medical gas system is handed over, every outlet is tested individually with a calibrated gas analyser, confirming what's coming out matches what's specified. This applies to every outlet on every pendant, wall bay, or panel, not a sample or a spot check. It's a required step under medical gas standards, and one EMROK carries out on every install before a room is cleared for use.

Before a system like this goes live, every single zone has to check in. Here the team's running diagnostics on the master alarm panel, confirming operating theatres, recovery, and every gas outlet across the hospital are talking to it correctly, and that alarms actually trigger and clear the way they're meant to.

Two gases. Two manifolds. One job: never let supply drop. Oxygen and medical air each run through their own auto changeover system, swapping cylinder banks automatically and reporting straight back to the alarms upstairs. If the manifold itself ever fails, there's a standalone regulator ready to tap into a bottle directly. This is what we mean when we say "no room for error".

There's an art to a good weld. Add quality copper pipe and a team who's done this thousands of times, and you get connections built to last, no matter how good they look on camera.

What does a completed medical gas install actually look like? Mitch walks through the finished job at Cura Noosa Hospital, covering every system EMROK installed and how it all fits together.

Everyone starts somewhere. The difference is having the right people around you and an environment where you're encouraged to keep learning.

Our training workshop gives the team the opportunity to work through installations, test equipment, ask questions and build confidence before applying those skills on live projects. It's a space where mistakes become lessons, experience is shared and everyone is supported to keep improving.

Investing in people has always made sense to us because better-trained people deliver better outcomes, both for each other and for our clients.

Every pipe carrying oxygen, medical air, medical vacuum or breathing air has to be identified along its entire length, not just where it connects to equipment. That means labelling every metre or so, at wall and floor penetrations, and at every valve and joint.

The reason the standard is this strict comes down to what's at stake. Multiple identical copper lines run together throughout a build. Once they're installed, there's no visual difference between them. If a line is misidentified during installation, commissioning, or a future renovation, the consequence isn't a paperwork issue, it's a wrong gas potentially reaching a patient, or a live line being cut into during unrelated works.

The projects are challenging, the standards are high and there's always something new to learn. But ask anyone on the team what keeps them here, and chances are they won't start by talking about the work. They'll talk about the people.

Working at EMROK means being part of a team that backs each other, enjoys solving problems together and takes real pride in what they do. We think that's worth holding onto, and it's something we're committed to building every day.

At our Birtinya Project, EMROK ran the commercial plumbing as a home-run PEX system: one dedicated line per fixture back to a central manifold, each isolated individually. If something needs attention down the track, it gets fixed at one valve, not by shutting off water to the whole site.
