A carpark entrance works hard from day one.

Constant vehicle movement, turning loads, weather exposure and daily wear all place demand on the concrete.

For this project, E5 Internal Cure and SteelX 5:25 were incorporated into the mix to help improve durability and crack control.

The aim was simple: build better performance into the concrete from the start. No added complexity. Just a smarter approach to long-term performance.

Have a carpark, pavement or high-traffic slab coming up? Talk to McClay Industries about designing better concrete from day one.

There's a reason more engineers are picking MiCD over a stack of spreadsheets.

It's a free concrete design platform — run your CCAA T48 and AS3600 calcs in one place instead of cross-checking two or three tools every time you touch a load case. And if you want the extra edge, SteelX is built right in.

Curious what it looks like on your next job?

Myth: concrete reaches full strength at 28 days.
Reality: 28 days is when we stopped measuring, not when the concrete stopped getting stronger.

Hydration doesn't have a deadline. Cement keeps reacting with water for months, even years, as long as moisture is available. The 28-day figure exists because it's a practical standard for specification and testing, most of the useful strength gain has happened by then, so it's a good enough checkpoint. It was never a claim that strength gain stops.

What actually determines how much of that later strength you get to keep:
— How long the slab was kept moist (curing duration, not just curing existence) — Ambient temperature and humidity during the cure window. Whether curing stopped early because the slab "looked" dry.

A slab can look fully cured on the surface days before it's anywhere close to done hydrating underneath. Cutting curing short doesn't just slow strength gain — it caps it, because once the moisture needed for hydration is gone, that reaction doesn't restart.

What's your standard curing duration on-site, and does it change by season?

"Just add more steel" isn't a watertight design strategy. Understanding how the section behaves under service loads is.

Six things that actually decide whether a structure stays dry:

Crack width. Reinforcement stress. Fibre contribution. Section capacity. Shrinkage and restraint. Permeability of the matrix.

Most of these get locked in long before anyone asks about a waterproofing system.

Which of these six gets the least attention on a typical job — in your experience?

Good finishability starts with getting the surface right early.

A roller tamper helps level and consolidate the concrete as it is placed, making the next stages of finishing easier for the crew.

Simple, practical and effective on all slab pours.

Looking for a concrete design tool that doesn't ask you to sign up for something new every time you need a different calc?

Mi Concrete Design is McClay Industries' free engineering platform. Run your slab designs to CCAA T48 and AS3600, right in your browser, no software to install.

And if you want it, SteelX is built right into the same workflow so you can see the value-add on your own numbers, without switching tools or re-entering your inputs.

Design tool first. Innovation on tap when you need it.

For the concreter, the challenge is simple: keep the mix workable, keep the surface manageable and get a consistent finish across the slab.

E5 Internal Cure helped do exactly that on this Triton Company Group project by retaining moisture within the concrete and supporting easier pumping, placing and finishing.

Up to 90% reduction in flexural crack width - that's what SteelX can do to an AS3600 calculation.

MiCD's Crack Width module shows you the result instantly, so you can design watertight structural concrete without relying on additional waterproofing systems.

Same bar arrangement. Same N20 @ 150mm. One variable changed.

RC only: 0.409mm calculated crack width.
Add 22 kg/m³ of SteelX: 0.096mm.

That's a 77% reduction - enough to bring the section under the 0.10mm watertight target. ULS capacity moved too, from 457.01 to 521.15 kNm/m.

The point isn't "more reinforcement." It's that the section's behaviour changed enough to hit a different design target entirely.

Where's the crack width sitting on your current design and is anyone actually checking it against a watertight target?

We call it Structural Watertight Concrete.

How many hours does a single slab design eat up when you're juggling CCAA T48 spreadsheets, AS3600 crack checks, and a separate report template?

MiCD keeps it all in one browser tab - load cases, SteelX dosing, and a professional PDF report, without rebuilding the same workflow every time.
