The moments that people remember most aren't always the biggest or boldest. More often, they're the ones that quietly improve everyday life.

Every project has a story. This one began with a client's love of knitting.

For Close Knit, that story began with our clients. Their brief challenged us to create two homes that felt connected, yet completely their own. Every decision was carefully considered, from the initial planning and the way the homes interact, to the material palette and the distinctive brick façade - inspired by mum's knitting - creating an analogy for the underlying concept to the entire project.

It's a project that reflects the personalities of the people who live there, and one we're incredibly proud to have been trusted with.

Amrish Maharaj Architecture's Close Knit explores how dual occupancy housing can support intergenerational living while balancing privacy, independence and connection.

Introducing, 'Close Knit'. A dual-occupancy home designed for a family that stays close. One side of the project accommodates the parents, while the other houses the daughter’s young family. It’s a modern take on multi-generational living that prioritizes both connection and independence.

The name is a tribute to the mother’s love for knitting. We translated the rhythm of the needle and yarn into the architecture itself, using patterned, hit-and-miss brickwork on the upper levels. This "woven" facade does more than just look beautiful; it filters light and provides privacy, much like a delicate knit.

A home that truly fits the people inside.
