CASE STUDY | Kardinia Park Redevelopment by Populous.

Kardinia Park is run by the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust (Trust) and is a statutory authority established under the Kardinia Park Stadium Act, 2016.

The Trust, governed by a board of seven Trustees, has been established to administer, promote and manage the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust Land more commonly known as GMHBA Stadium.

The Kardinia Park Precinct that surrounds the 36,000-crowd capacity stadium is an icon of Geelong and is steeped in history. The Stadium’s iconic light towers it is visibly present no matter which direction you enter the city from.

The stadium is a rare asset for a regional city; a source of pride for the community and an enabler for major events once reserved for capital cities to take place in Geelong with sizeable economic benefits.

Home to the AFL Geelong Cats, the redevelopment of the 5th stage has seen the Victorian State Government commit to $142m.

The project will secure the venue’s status as Australia’s best regional stadium and complete the ground’s transformation.

The project includes:
→ A new grandstand at the northern end of the stadium, increasing the overall capacity to over 40,000,
→ A new indoor cricket hub to be located between the stadium and the railway line,
→ A new entry plaza to be established adjacent to Moorabool Street and the north of the stadium,
→ New professional and community sports change rooms and facilities, and
→ A sports museum.

Whether it be an AFL match, T20 cricket or one of the many community events held at the stadium, patrons will continue to enjoy world-class facilities year-round. The ultimate Third Place for the community at large.

Like so many other buildings in the district, soon after the earthquake devastated Christchurch, the Dunsandel Community Hall was deemed unsafe and no longer fit for purpose.

The shaken, but by no means, broken community had lost its beloved meeting place for creating lifelong memories. Just about every member of this local community had at some point in their life attended a christening, milestone birthday or Historic Society event in this Hall.

There was never any question about whether this community would need a new social gathering place; it was always a question of how and where could it be built? A Third Place for a community that needed to regain a place to gather, where they would feel safe again and continue to share stories.

CASE STUDY | Karekare Surf Life Saving Club - 106 Architects.

The ultimate Third Place for its community...

An area immortalised in song by Crowded House on their Together Alone album in 1993, the location also famously used in the Academy Award-winning film The Piano.

Formed in 1935, Karekare Surf Life Saving Club has a proud history of patrolling, training and competition.

Realising the need to update the old and tired SLS facility, the club embarked on a project to completely replace the building.

106 Architects became involved in the new SLS Club in 2007, collaborating with surf club members and project managers MPM Projects, based on an initial concept by Hillery Priest Architecture dating back to 2002.

A project that is now completed in 2022! 👏🏻

CASE STUDY | Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub.

The 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes caused extensive damage to infrastructure and buildings.

As a result of both, Christchurch’s sporting facilities needed to be relocated, including the athletics and field amenities at QEII Park, the hockey turfs at Porritt Park, some of the tennis courts at Wilding Park, and the rugby league fields displaced from Rugby League Park in Addington by Christchurch Stadium.

It was important that the project team creating the new masterplan for Christchurch City Council - lead by 106 Architects, Beca + Global Leisure Group - connected the facilities – fields, tracks, courts, the landscape, and buildings – using Third Place Thinking™. Creating a new 'Third Place' for the community.

Located in the southeast of the city, the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub - meaning ‘many spring waters’ refers to the many springs and tributaries in the area – forms part of the ancestral landscape of Ngāi Tahu. This area was once an important place for local Māori, who came together to connect and collaborate.

CASE STUDY | Dunsandel Community Centre by 106 Architects.

𝘗𝘙𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘐𝘕 𝘊𝘙𝘌𝘈𝘛𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘈 𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘙𝘋 𝘗𝘓𝘈𝘊𝘌.

106 Architects is very proud of what it has achieved with the Dunsandel Community Centre and feel that it is a model that could be emulated by other communities across the globe. The surrounding districts around Selwyn District, where this project landed, have all had a chance to see and use this facility and are already asking, ‘where’s ours?’

When a project’s success creates healthy neighbourly envy, you know you have discovered a winning formula. A large part of that winning formula was an empathetic yet strategic Council as a client and an engaged community group who opened their minds to the possibilities for a new future of stories.

In leading this project, Dion Gosling OLY - Sports Architect at 106 Architects - wanted to respect the scale of a community centre. He sought to introduce intimacy; materials and space and light that people would recognise from their homes.

Brick veneer was chosen as an external skin – that could ultimately be erected by a local community builder – then render it and paint it to give it the “mass” needed for community centre scale. Bringing in elements of warmth and materials and texture, plus the intimacy and scale that you typically only get through a residential development.
