The first home at The Avenues is taking shape.

Construction has started on the first house at The Avenues estate on Sugarloaf Road, Stanthorpe, being built by Wes Smith Building.

We worked with the owners on the building drafting, soil testing, structural and foundation engineering, energy efficiency assessment and effluent disposal design.

Always good to see a project go from plans on our desks to a frame on site.

A striking coastal home - engineered for a seriously challenging site.

The Point Arkwright Residence sits on a compact block close to beachside vegetation, with bushfire and flood hazard overlays, a drainage and services easement, corrosive salt air and problematic sandy soil.

C Consulting Group provided the structural engineering, including framing, bracing, tie-downs, connection detailing, foundations and floor framing. We also completed the bushfire, energy-efficiency and stormwater assessments.

Structural steel forms the backbone of Norm Richards’ light-filled architectural design, allowing expansive glazing, natural breezeways and a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

A challenging brief, a highly collaborative team and a result we’re extremely proud of.

Full circle

Anita likes to tell the story about helping me out one time by wandering around a dam with a levelling staff and our 1st child in a sling on her chest. I was using a British made theodolite that belongs to my father. That technology, like my dad (former Director of Murray & Associates), is now retired. To be clear, although we do offer a wide range of services, surveying isn't one of them. Operating a small consultancy in Stanthorpe a couple of decades ago, we pretty much did whatever anyone asked us to.

Fast forward 19 years and our eldest lad is now surveying. Here he is running through a much more modern piece of equipment with our engineering staff on a development project in Stanthorpe. Most of the equipment these days only takes one operator, which is kind of a shame because it means you don't get to tell stories about the time your wife had to traipse around a dam all day with a baby strapped to her chest and a 4m long staff in her arms.

Meet James

A Stanthorpe local, James completed a double degree in Engineering and Business at QUT in Brisbane.

James’s hands-on experience in civil construction as a machinery operator, coupled with a background in agriculture on the family farm at Sweet’s Strawberry Runners, has given him a strong appreciation for how things work in practice, not just on paper.

James also has a bit of a green thumb and has helped add some life to the C Consulting office with our growing collection of plants. He’s pretty handy with the drone too (mostly!).

We recently asked James a few questions to get to know him a little better - here’s what he had to say:

What first made you want to become an engineer?
Growing up on the family farm and in the earthmoving business, I've always liked knowing why something is built the way it is: why a part sits where it does on an engine, or why a gusset goes on that corner of an I-beam and not the other. I settled on and finished mechanical, but mechanical work is thin on the ground out here, so I shifted to civil and structural (Thanks to Cam!). It was a much easier move than I expected.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?
I'm easily entertained. Bush walking, cards with mates, jamming on the guitar, water skiing and most things in between. But the pick of them is hard enduro riding.

What song would be on the soundtrack to your workday?
I think it'd be Ben Rector's cover of 'It's A Great Day To Be Alive'.

A few photos from just some of the many projects where we have provided engineering design services in collaboration with Wilkos Building across the region.

These projects have included a range of Queensland Government school and public infrastructure works, including accessible pathways, ramps and bathroom renovations at various State High Schools; and covered ramps and accessible classroom dividing walls at various State Primary Schools in the region

There have even been a few unexpected site visitors along the way! See if you can spot one of them in the photos.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Lagnicourt Pozieres in Stanthorpe — a beautiful new wedding venue in the Granite Belt.

Congratulations to the McMahon team on realising their vision. It's always rewarding to see a project of this calibre come to completion. A special mention to Brenton and Dale at S & G Building for the outstanding craftsmanship in bringing it to life, and to the team at C Consulting Group who delivered the engineering works.

Thank you to Penny Potter for organising a wonderful evening. Tonya and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We didn’t choose the colour - or write the sign - but we did provide the engineering behind the Central Hotel Stanthorpe and Star Liquor redevelopment.

Our involvement included civil engineering including car parking, drainage and trade waste, structural engineering design and inspections. Caughley and Co were the project managers.

Great work to the team at GHC Building Solutions for taking this from concept through to completion.

It’s certainly been a project that’s got people talking…
