A thoughtful first step in a much bigger plan.

For this Bardon Queenslander, the brief wasn’t just about renovating, it was about setting a clear direction for how the home would evolve over time.

Working with a long-term master plan, Stage One focused on the essentials:
• Bringing everyday living onto one level
• Improving connection to the garden
• Making the home more practical to live in now
• Laying the groundwork for what comes next.

In this client and designer interview, we talk through the thinking behind the first stage and how a clear plan from the beginning helps avoid compromise later.

This is what a good renovation strategy looks like, not just solving today’s problems, but making sure every move counts toward the bigger picture.

More than 10 years after the original home, this Camp Hill family invited us back to design the next chapter.

What began as a simple “pool pavilion” became something much more. A flexible, multi-purpose retreat that adapts with family life over time. From teenage hangout to guest space, home office to quiet escape, every detail is designed to work hard while feeling calm and effortless.

Carefully positioned among an established garden (and over a sewer line), the pavilion opens generously to the pool with sliding corners, blurring inside and out while staying connected to the original home.

This is what we love most, helping clients evolve their homes over time so they continue to feel just right for the way they live now.

Inside the pavilion, every millimetre works.

Custom joinery hides a full guest bed, storage, and workspace, letting the room move easily between home office, teenage hangout, media space or visitor retreat.

By keeping services tucked away and giving priority to the garden outlook, the room feels calm, uncluttered and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Small footprint. Big possibilities. Brisbane living at its best.

The only place this pavilion could go was directly over a sewer line, so the design had to work harder, not bigger.

Large corner sliders open the whole space to the garden, pool and the established garden. With Brisbane’s climate in mind, the pavilion becomes a natural extension of outdoor living: light, open, and completely at ease in the landscape.

A compact structure that delivers calm, connection and purpose.

A decade after designing this Camp Hill home, the family invited us back to help their home grow with them.

What began as a simple request for more flexibility became a thoughtful re‑imagining of how the backyard could support teenage life, guest stays, and quiet weekend living.

Preserving the established garden and character of the original home was essential, so every gesture, from the entry path to the new pavilion, builds gently on what was already loved.

It’s the little moments that make a home feel complete.

From the light‑filled kitchen to the compact yet fully functional laundry, every detail in this extension was designed to feel intentional, not transitional.

Thoughtful circulation makes each area feel purposeful and comfortable for long‑term living.

Crafted for ease, dignity, and everyday enjoyment.

Swipe to see the transformation ➡️

This property began with a tight, narrow available site and a desire to stay connected to family, without sacrificing independence. Our challenge was to create a self‑contained home full of light, function, and comfort, all while working within the layout of the existing home and block.

These before-and-after images show how a constrained area was reshaped into a generous, inviting extension with carefully planned spaces, accessible design features, and a seamless relationship to the original home.

A reminder of what tho achieve, even on the most challenging sites.
