Ravenswood School for Girls needed four new Year 6 classrooms, but there was only one place to put them: a courtyard surrounded by multi-storey buildings.

The challenge was to create new learning spaces without making the courtyard feel even more built up.

Our solution brought the classrooms, accessibility works and landscaping together as one integrated design.

Green walls, climbing vines and landscaping introduced greenery without taking away valuable outdoor space. Integrated ramps and stairs resolved the varying site levels, while large windows and glazed doors kept the new classrooms connected to the courtyard.

The classrooms were manufactured offsite while site works progressed, helping reduce disruption to the active school campus.

The result transformed an underused hard-surfaced area into a green, accessible environment for learning and gathering.

Not just a building in a courtyard. A new courtyard.

Please join us in welcoming James to the Marathon team as our new Senior Design Associate.

James brings more than two decades of architectural experience, most recently as Principal Architect at NBRS, where he led major education and public infrastructure projects across NSW, including the award-winning Armidale Secondary College.

He joins Lukas, Luiza and Michael as part of our design team, working on education, health and commercial projects from concept through to completion.

Big day on site in Port Macquarie last week as four new classrooms touched down at Aspect's highly anticipated new campus at Thrumster.

Eight modules. One crane. A lot of coordination and a crowd! School students and staff turned out to watch the action in a school-led community event, making it a day the kids won't forget.

Brock from Marathon was on the ground, even getting to have a chat with the Port Macquarie News about the logistics of the operation.

This project was a unique collaboration behind the scenes too. King + Campbell leading design and Modstruct Group taking care of civil works and renovation of an existing building on site.

Built in the factory last year, it was wonderful to see these classrooms land in their permanent home and getting ready for the schools official opening day.
