Australia is trialing an innovative road safety measure using glow-in-the-dark lane markings on rural roads in Victoria.

These photoluminescent lines absorb sunlight during the day and emit a visible glow at night, enhancing visibility without the need for traditional streetlights.

This futuristic solution aims to reduce accidents on poorly lit roads, lower energy consumption, and improve navigation for drivers and emergency services.

If the pilot is successful, this technology could be widely adopted across Australia's extensive highway network and potentially worldwide.

Roads paved with tar soaked wooden blocks …

22 April 1935, "Block Boys at St Peters"....Block boys, or 'sparrow starvers', was the name originally given to young boys employed as street sweepers to keep Sydney's streets clear of dust and manure. They were tasked with removing horse dung and other nuisances from the city’s streets. Each block boy was in charge of a city block, hence the name. The manure was kept in special receptacles until it was collected and sold to the public as fertiliser.

These young block boys pictured from 1935 are a different kind of block boy. The woodblock road (Cooks River Road at St Peters, now part of the Princes Highway) is going to be resurfaced with concrete and workmen have been digging up the woodblocks. The boys of the neighbourhood took advantage of the occasion hanging around to collect cartloads of fuel for the coming winter, to be used by their families for heating and cooking.
