As we head towards Spring Lawn Lovers can help their lawn come out of Winter in better condition if they tackle these tasks now while the grasses are actively growing.

✅ Aerate with a weighted spike roller (or pitchfork if they’re up for a workout).
✅ Remove weeds
✅ Repair damaged or bare patches by roughing-up / top-dress / seed / light top-dress over seed / liquid seaweed conditioner (seaweed is a good safe all-rounder that will also help with lawn seeding).
✅ Lift blades on the lawn mower for higher grass leaf growth. Hinders weeds attempted takeover in dormant grass growing period (Winter) as well as other photosynthesis type things.
✅ Start to reduce watering ‘run times’ once it starts to cool down a little.
✅ Apply slow release Fertiliser

🌱 How good is it to see the effects of the recent much-needed rain on our plants and parched lawns turning green again?

We're well and truly back into storm season now. Hopefully you didn't suffer any damage from the recent severe storms. While the rain has been good, it's certainly unpredictable at this time of year.

A well-laid-out watering system can be a very conservative and controlled method of keeping your selected gardens or lawns alive and thriving, particularly during the unpredictable summer months. They can then also be turned down or completely off during dormant growth or wet times.

The shop is busy with people wanting irrigation to help with the super dry conditions we have at the moment so here are our top tips to help you calculate what you need:

There are 3 main / basic requirements of an effective sprinkler watering system for a standard suburban sized property:

1. Every sprinkler head must be getting hit by water from at least 1 other sprinkler, or in the case of gardens where there is foliage obstruction, their throw radius must at least have the ability to do so.
2. When doing only 1 row of sprinklers, throw the last 1/3 of sprinklers throw radius to waste due to lighter watering out in the far reaches, or put sprinklers closer together to compensate.
3. Only use a maximum of 80% of your measured flow rate (e.g. if your Tap is giving you 30Lt/min, only use 24Lt/min when calculating how many sprinklers you can run at once).

🏜️ And just like that we're back into that familiar cycle of long periods of dry weather. While we might be enjoying a respite from the unseasonable rain of previous months, our lawns and plants are already suffering.

Remember to water your lawn thoroughly and infrequently as this encourages deeper roots and deeper roots help lawns to prosper in hotter weather. Deep-rooted lawns can pull water from deeper depths and can wait several days between watering.

This means they are stronger and less susceptible to disease and funghi. While it might sound counter-productive, giving your lawn a really good water a couple of times a week is far better than short periods of watering every day.

People frequently underestimate the importance of regular watering for lawn and plant health. You might have noticed grass yellowing a bit more recently as we're back into that familiar cycle of periods of very dry weather with intermittent heavy rain.
