Cut at first light, laid by lunch. That's the whole idea.

A delivery day starts early. The harvester goes out while the dew is still on, slabs are cut and stacked straight onto pallets, pallets go onto the truck, and out the gate they go.

Turf is a living thing on a clock. Every hour it sits stacked and warm is an hour it's not putting roots down. Get it on the ground the same day and it takes hold like nothing else.

Which is why we ask for a bit of prep before we turn up:

- Ground finished and watered the day before, so it's moist underneath.
- A flat, firm drop spot near where the lawn is going and clear of the driveway.
- An honest heads up about access. Plenty of the older streets in South Grafton and Maclean weren't built for a loaded truck. We'd much rather know before we're in it.
- The hose connected and reaching, because the first watering happens as the turf goes down.

This is the part nobody sees. Turf comes off the harvester in slabs, gets stacked straight onto the pallet, and then someone actually looks at it.
Even thickness. A clean cut with no ragged edges.
Roots holding the slab together when you pick it up by one end.

Anything that doesn't measure up stays here.
It's a lot cheaper for us to leave it in the paddock than for you to find out about it on your driveway.

That check is the whole reason a roll holds together when you lift it, and the whole reason it knits in fast once it's down.

Those prickles that ruin summer are forming right now.

Bindii sits flat and soft in the lawn all winter, then sets its seed the moment it warms up. Once that seed hardens, nothing you spray will soften it. You just wait it out, barefoot, until it drops.

So this is the fortnight:

1. Look for flat, feathery, carrot-top leaves in the thin and worn patches. No prickle yet, and that's the point.
2. Spray while it's still soft, with a bindii and clover product. Check the label against your grass type, especially on buffalo.
3. Water the lawn the day before you spray, not after. A plant that's growing takes it up properly.
4. Look again in three weeks and hit the late ones.

It's worst in the thin, sandy lawns down the river, Ulmarra through Maclean and out to Yamba.

1500 m² of TifTuf, delivered and laid at Palmers Island.

A new build with nothing around it but graded sand. One day's work later, a lawn.

Here's how it went.

Levels first. On sand you get one shot at it, because you can't fix a dip once the turf is over the top of it.

Then our own truck and our own turf. Cut at first light, straight onto the truck, on site before the day warmed up. No middleman and no third-party freight, which is the whole reason it turns up still cool and takes hold fast.

And then the part people don't always realise we do: our crew laid all 1500 m² of it. We don't just drop it on the driveway and drive off. Rolls butted tight, joins staggered, no gaps to dry out and no overlaps to scalp.

If you're seeing round brown patches, that's urine burn.
Dog urine carries a big dose of nitrogen, so each spot cops the equivalent of way too much fertiliser at once.

Here's how to get on top of it:

💧 Water the spot straight after with the hose
🐕 Teach them to use one out-of-the-way corner
🪨 Dog Rocks and pheromone stakes are worth a try
🌱 For dead patches: rake out, top up with soil and dolomite lime, then water and mow as normal

The surrounding turf will fill the gap back in, and a tough warm season variety does it fastest.
