In the firing with Steve Williams I packed these foliage vases in a sidestoking area and during the later stages of the firing kept them covered with coals right through to shutdown which is something that Steve doesn’t normally do.
I’m leaving this one here so it can be a reference/ comparison piece with work from home for the workshop starting here in a weeks time.

A dramatic cleft in the volcanic rhyolite rock that forms much of this headland - I stood in that gap as the wind whipped through with increasing intensity. Embedded rock framed the view north to Cape Perpendicular and on the ground another rock was embedded within rusting steel in a remnant concrete matrix.

It’s rare to find a retired geologist with an interest in ceramics grinding the feldspathic sandstone from underneath her house between 2 stones to use in glaze testing.
And if that wasn’t special enough, Penny Wood has done a triaxial clay body blend with 3 clays from the area ( including one from under her house ) with porosity and shrinkage recorded for each mix.
Amazing!

Last night the firing finished with a large back pressured stoke to fill the firebox before we closed down.
Big thanks to Steve Williams and Debbie Williams for having us as part of the firing team along with Mahalia and Shane Toft.

While Mahalia and I were on shift together for Steve Williams we managed to have a little creative play on perception.

It involved using found objects in different materials to do quick and dirty sculpts in 2 minutes - here Mahalia has used my found objects of beach stones , brick and metal paint mixer to create this strong composition.
Admittedly Steve Williams did suggest cropping this image to get to the guts of the composition - that’s why we are both here with him.

They pack a little differently here with Steve Williams with Shane Toth flat out in the early stages - but I’m not sure about their cone placement. The pack finished up this afternoon and we are on campfire stage outside the kiln at the moment as we are on a raw glaze firing schedule.
