ALWAYS HOUSE | FLINDERS
This is one of those projects we’re incredibly proud to have our name attached to.
Designed by renowned Melbourne architects Kennedy Nolan, the Always House has gone on to receive significant architectural recognition and numerous accolades — and behind its striking finished form is an enormous amount of concrete construction.
APD Concreting was engaged through Gaffney Constructions to undertake the extensive concrete works throughout the build.
And this one started a long way below ground.
Due to the home’s position on the coastal cliff, bored piers extended approximately 27 metres deep, engineered to ensure the house remained structurally supported in the event of future erosion to the cliff face.
On top of the bored piers, we constructed 600 × 600mm reinforced concrete capping beams, incorporating large reinforcement cages with 20mm bar. These formed the bearers supporting the structure above.
From there, we constructed the reinforced ground raft slab, incorporating the same substantial beam and reinforcement cage system throughout.
Our concrete works continued through the entire build - from the foundations and ground slab, to suspended slabs and the incredible suspended concrete roof structure that has become such a defining element of the home.
Working on a site of this complexity, right on the coastline, required considerable planning, formwork, reinforcement and precision at every stage.
We then finished the project with an exposed aggregate driveway in Golden Beach/Jupiter, selected to complement the natural coastal tones of the architecture and surrounding landscape.
