The air looks clear.

There is no obvious dust cloud.

No visible smoke.

No strong chemical smell.

Does that mean the exposure is controlled?

๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜†.

Some airborne contaminants are visible.

Others may be present without anything obvious to alert the people working nearby.

And the health effects do not always appear immediately.

That is why understanding airborne exposure requires more than looking around a workplace and deciding the air seems fine.

You need to understand the actual work.

โ€ข What substances are being used?
โ€ข What contaminants can the process generate?
โ€ข How might people breathe them in?
โ€ข What controls are in place?
โ€ข And how do you know those controls are effective?

This is particularly relevant during National Safe Work Month's focus on

Walking away from security is rarely impulsive.

It is usually the result of many quiet moments where something no longer fits.

For a long time, I tried to make myself fit instead.
To compromise.
To stay comfortable.

Eventually, the cost of staying outweighed the fear of leaving.

Walking away was not about bravery.
It was about honesty.

Betting on yourself does not feel confident at first.
It feels uncertain.
It feels exposing.
It feels like standing without a net.

What helped was trusting my work ethic more than my fear.

I did not need to know everything.
I needed to be willing to learn as I went.

That willingness changed the trajectory of my work and leadership.

Diesel-powered equipment is so common that the exhaust can start to feel like part of the workplace.

A forklift moves through the loading area.
A truck idles inside the workshop.
Plant runs inside a shed.
A vehicle is tested in an enclosed maintenance bay.

Nobody sees an โ€œincident.โ€
But people may still be breathing the emissions.
And location matters.

The same diesel engine operating outdoors can create a very different exposure situation when it is running in a workshop, tunnel, enclosed loading area or other poorly ventilated space.

In a vehicle maintenance workshop, diesel engines may need to run during servicing or testing. That makes it important to consider how exhaust is captured, where emissions can travel, whether extraction is effective, and who may be exposed.

From ๐Ÿญ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฒ, a new Workplace Exposure Limit of 0.01 mg/mยณ for diesel particulate matter will apply. Safe Work Australia identifies potential exposure across industries including mining, quarrying, tunnelling, construction, agriculture, transport and logistics, oil and gas, and vehicle maintenance.

So do not only ask: โ€œDo we use diesel equipment?โ€

Ask:
Where does it operate?
How long does it run?
Who works nearby?
How enclosed is the space?
Where does the exhaust go?
And are the existing controls actually reducing exposure?

Synergy Safety Solutions can help identify where diesel emissions may be exposing workers and review the controls around the work.

Air monitoring can give you valuable information.
But the sample itself does not control exposure.

A result can help answer questions such as:
โ€ข Are workers approaching or exceeding an exposure limit?
โ€ข Does exposure change between tasks?
โ€ข Are existing controls working?
โ€ข Do we need to investigate further?

Safe Work Australia says air monitoring may be required where a PCBU is not certain on reasonable grounds whether airborne concentrations exceed the applicable limit, or where monitoring is needed to determine whether there is a risk to health.

Monitoring can also help assess whether controls such as ventilation are effective.
But then something needs to happen with that information.

If the result raises questions, go back to the work.
โ€ข What is generating the contaminant?
โ€ข Who is exposed?
โ€ข When is exposure highest?
โ€ข And what needs to change about the controls?

That is the point made in this weekโ€™s article:
Monitoring gives you information. What happens next is what protects people.

๐— ๐˜†๐˜๐—ต: Airborne exposure becomes a compliance issue on 1 December.
๐—™๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜: The duty already exists.

The December date matters because Australia is transitioning from the current WES list to the new Workplace Exposure Limits framework.

It does not mean businesses can wait until then to start managing exposure.

Under the model WHS Regulations, regulation 49, a PCBU must ensure that no person at the workplace is exposed to an airborne concentration above the applicable exposure standard.

Under regulation 50, air monitoring is required where the PCBU is not certain on reasonable grounds whether the concentration exceeds the applicable standard, or where monitoring is necessary to determine whether there is a risk to health. Air-monitoring records must also be retained for 30 years and made accessible to people who may be exposed.

Until 30 November 2026, the current WES requirements continue to apply.

From 1 December 2026, the WEL framework takes effect. Safe Work Australia

So the practical question now is not: โ€œWhat do we need to do in December?โ€
It is: โ€œDo we understand the airborne exposure happening in our workplace now?โ€

Synergy Safety Solutions can help identify airborne exposure risks and review whether existing controls are doing enough.

Some hazards are easy to see.

A missing guard.
An unprotected edge.
A vehicle moving through a pedestrian area.

Airborne exposure can be different.

Dust, fumes, vapours, gases and mists can be created during ordinary work without causing an immediate incident.

Sometimes you can see them.
Sometimes you cannot.
And the harm may develop over time.

That is particularly relevant right now.

But 1 December should not be the first time a workplace asks:
What is our work putting into the air, and who could be breathing it?
โœ”๏ธ Cutting
โœ”๏ธ Grinding
โœ”๏ธ Welding
โœ”๏ธ Spraying
โœ”๏ธ Sanding
โœ”๏ธ Cleaning
โœ”๏ธ Diesel equipment
โœ”๏ธ Dusty material handling

These activities can all create exposure even where there is no obvious โ€œchemical incident.โ€

This weekโ€™s article looks at what is changing, what duties already exist, and what workplaces should be reviewing now.

Buying PPE is not the same as managing PPE.
Neither is issuing it.

A working PPE system needs to keep answering questions long after the equipment leaves the storeroom.

Is it still suitable for the hazard?
Does it fit the person?
Does it work with the other PPE they need?
What is degrading it?
What should workers inspect?
When should it be replaced?
Can replacements actually be accessed?
Has the task changed?
And are we relying on PPE for a risk that could be better controlled elsewhere?

Those questions matter because PPE sits between the hazard and the person.

If that last line of protection is being relied on, the system behind it needs to work.
This weekโ€™s article has focused on the working life of PPE, not simply the purchase date.

And during ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ตโ€™๐˜€ current focus on what WHS protects, it is a useful reminder that many occupational health risks, including harmful substances, noise and other exposures, can cause harm over time rather than immediately.

Synergy Safety Solutions can help review whether your PPE system still matches the hazards, tasks and people relying on it.

Every piece of PPE might be suitable on its own.

That does not automatically mean it works properly when everything is worn together.

Safety glasses can interfere with a respirator seal.
Earmuffs may not sit correctly with some helmets.
Face protection can affect visibility or movement.
Protective clothing can interfere with harnesses or other equipment.
Gloves can change grip and dexterity.

That is why compatibility deserves its own check.

Do not only ask: โ€œIs each item suitable?โ€
Ask: โ€œWhat happens when the worker wears all of it together while doing the real job?โ€

Can they still see?
Move?
Communicate?
Maintain the required seal?
Use tools properly?
Work without constantly adjusting or removing equipment?

PPE should be assessed as part of the whole task, not as isolated items.

08/10/2026

Better PPE management does not mean relying on PPE more heavily.

That distinction matters.

PPE remains a lower-order control because the hazard is still there.

If gloves are constantly being damaged because someone has to reach past a sharp edge, the answer may not be a tougher glove.

If respiratory protection is doing most of the work against dust, there may be opportunities to improve extraction, isolation or the work method.

If hearing protection has to be worn for an entire shift, it is still worth asking what can be done about the noise at its source.

PPE can be an important part of the control strategy.
But it should not automatically become the whole strategy.

That gives workplaces two useful questions:
โœ”๏ธ Is this PPE still protecting the person?
โœ”๏ธ Why are we relying on it in the first place?

That second question can uncover opportunities to control the risk earlier and more effectively.

Safe Work Australiaโ€™s National Safe Work Month resources are currently encouraging workplaces to review the effectiveness of their controls and use the hierarchy of controls to address hazards at their source.

Synergy Safety Solutions can help identify where risks can be better controlled before they reach the worker.
