We often get asked if it is still okay to plant through winter. Adding to the confusion, are many articles appearing in the media that say to keep planting, to not plant or planting just before or just after winter is best. With so much conflicting information, it is easy to be completely unsure what to do.

The answer is not completely simple. To start, it depends on where you live. Broadly, if you are on the coast, away from the risk of frost, winter can be a great time to plant. Getting into the garden now is much easier than dealing with the heat and the new plants will appreciate it too.

In the colder, frostier areas it is not as straight forward because each area has its own characteristics that will determine whether or not to plant in winter.
Then we add the layer of plant selection. Some plants are hardy and can be planted in winter, others will be frost hardy once established, so it is best to hold off on those ones until the warmer months return. The addition of a tree guard will protect young plants from frost damage and can be a good investment.

At Native Grace, we have extensive experience with native plants and are familiar with the local area - you don't get this knowledge just anywhere! Get in touch and ask for help before you plant. We want to help you create the best garden for your area.

Are you in a coastal zone, or a cold, frosty zone? Let us know below and share your experiences dealing with your particular area.

Ever thought you would like to have more birds in your garden?

Join us Sunday 14th June to learn about creating not just a garden but a habitat that will have your local birds moving in and brightening your yard. The workshop will run from 9.30am to 11.00am and includes morning tea supplied by the Robbo Donut Van!

Creating a bird friendly garden, is not just about planting an odd grevillea - it needs to be a well planned environment that creates habitat and provides year round food. At the workshop learn about the different food sources for birds, designing layers of plants and some of the other things you can do to build a sustainable garden.

Hurry! The Workshop is on this weekend - don't miss out!

This month's plant spotlight 🌿 One of our favourites for colour, texture and garden impact.

Leptospermum 'Cardwell' makes for a great feature plant in the garden. Masses of flowers in Spring that will have your garden buzzing with bees, not to mention the birds that will be making it their favourite, too.

Along with most Leptospermums, they will happily deal with wet conditions or heavy soils. Have a free-draining soil? Not to worry, a bit of watering to get them established and they'll be happy with just an occasional drink. Cardwells are also one of the many tea trees we stock that are also frost hardy.

We have them in stock in 140mm pots, ready for planting!

Would you plant this in your garden? Let us know in the comments 🌱
