The Yarra Valley House by JAM Architects was featured in Issue 17 of The Local Project.

Yarra Valley House is a self-sustainable three bedroom, three bathroom family home located in the lush eucalyptus forests of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges. The residence was constructed several years after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires destroyed the original home and much of the surrounding landscape.

The new design embodies a deep sense of spatial and environmental connection, with a focus on textural materiality.

Moralla Road, Kooyong

The Moralla Residence provides a generously sized contemporary family residence.

The design challenge was to maintain all of the amenity of the current 5 bedroom family dwelling into a more space efficient new dwelling, on a considerably smaller urban infill site.

The solution resulted in a home over 3 levels, with basement car parking, home theatre and cellar, with living, home office and social spaces at ground floor leading out to a rear north facing terrace and pool area. The more private areas including bedrooms and retreats are positioned at first floor level.

Moubray Street

The Moubray Street Residence develops common themes of work undertaken by JAM Architects by inserting contemporary solutions into heritage streetscapes, ensuring efficient use of space in confined inner urban sites within planning controls and exploring simple, legible design solutions.

The challenge for JAM Architects was to design a contemporary, functional home within the context of the heritage Victorian streetscape – a re-interpretation of the classic terrace.

Foam Road, St Andrews.

Despite being a relatively large residence, the primary house and the guest house nestle comfortably onto the site, unimposing. The palette of natural materials sits well within the landscape, and the fine details ensure the building form is refined and contemporary.

Archer Close, Mount Eliza

This coastal residence is located within the older, established precinct of Mount Eliza which is characterised by larger single level homes set amongst an undulating landscape. Natural timber cladding and sand colored rammed earth walls feature in this dwelling

The sweeping, curved rammed earth spine to the dwelling leads from the entry door wrapping around and creating a private rear north facing courtyard where outward views from habitable spaces are focused out onto beautifully manicured landscape. A lightweight, floating skillion roof provides a counterpoint to the solid base of the dwelling.

Pleasant Road, Hawthorn

The urban infill design of 10, four level townhouses sought to consolidate a large, under utilised site in the heart of Hawthorn. Previously containing post war flats, the proposed dwellings are generously proportioned and suitable for downsizing occupants desiring a lower maintenance lifestyle. Skillion roofs, raw rendered concrete and metal cladding all reverberate the existing design aesthetic of the surrounding streetscape.

Each town house has a sense of privacy and individual identity – while providing equal amenity to sunlight and outward views.
