Modern Living in a Heritage Conservation Area
Tucked within Cooks Hill’s Heritage Precinct, this cottage has been transformed with a contemporary two-storey rear addition.
Respecting the character of the original home was key — so we worked closely with a Heritage Consultant and Newcastle Council to design an addition that feels distinctly modern yet sits comfortably alongside the historic streetscape.
The result? A light-filled kitchen, living and dining hub that opens to an alfresco and elevated pool, with a private parents’ retreat above capturing city views — all while honouring the heritage setting.

This home has been transformed with a striking new extension and pool, alongside a thoughtful renovation and reconfiguration of the existing house, creating a seamless flow throughout.
The extension introduces two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a second living area — all opening directly onto the level yard and a sparkling new pool. Timber-lined ceilings and highlight windows bring warmth and natural light.
The result? A functional, contemporary home designed to make family living both easy and enjoyable, with a layout that works perfectly for everyday life.

The design features:

A steep site, tricky driveway grades, and strict height limits made this one a challenge — but with clever design and close collaboration with LMCC, it’s now ready to build.
