WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: DO NOT IGNORE DAMAGED TIMBER CLADDING

Peeling paint can be a maintenance issue, but cracked, soft or badly weathered cladding may indicate that moisture has reached the timber beneath the coating.

Warning signs worth checking include:

- Boards that feel soft or crumbly
- Splitting around joins and fixings
- Paint repeatedly lifting in the same area
- Gaps opening between boards or trims
- Water staining around windows and doors
- Damage concentrated near the bottom of walls

The visible board may not be the only issue, so damaged cladding should be inspected before deciding whether a local repair or broader replacement is appropriate.

If you are concerned about an area of timber cladding, send through clear photos, your suburb and a short description.

A few useful details can make it much easier to understand your job and work out the next step.

When contacting JARMO Carpentry, please include:

- Your name and suburb
- A short description of the work
- A few clear photos from different angles
- Approximate measurements, if available
- Any important timing or access requirements
- Whether materials have already been purchased

Some jobs can be discussed from this information, while others will need a quick site inspection and measure-up before a price or approach can be confirmed.

HOURLY RATE OR FIXED PRICE — WHAT SUITS YOUR JOB?

Not every carpentry job needs to be priced the same way.

Hourly, minimum, half-day or day rates can suit smaller jobs where the work is straightforward but the exact time may vary. A fixed labour price is often better for larger jobs once the scope, materials and site conditions are clearly understood.

Whichever approach suits the job, the important part is agreeing on it before work begins and explaining what is included. If something unexpected is uncovered, I will discuss it with the client before carrying out additional work outside the agreed scope.

Have a job in mind? Send through the details and I can recommend the most sensible way to price it.

WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: PROTECT FRESHLY CUT EXTERIOR TIMBER

Treated timber is manufactured for outdoor use, but cutting or drilling it can expose fresh timber that may need additional protection.

Applying a suitable timber preservative to cut ends, notches and drilled areas helps maintain protection where the original treatment envelope has been disturbed.

Good exterior timber work also considers:

- Keeping end grain away from standing water
- Allowing drainage and airflow
- Using fixings suited to the treatment and exposure
- Protecting horizontal framing surfaces where appropriate
- Following the timber supplier's installation requirements

It is a small step during construction that can help the finished work perform better over time.

WHY A QUICK SITE INSPECTION CAN MAKE FOR A BETTER QUOTE

Photos and measurements are a useful starting point, but some carpentry jobs need to be seen in person before the scope and price can be confirmed properly.

A site inspection allows me to check details such as:

- Access and working space
- Existing construction and hidden constraints
- Accurate measurements and finished heights
- Ground conditions, drainage and support requirements
- Materials, fixings and likely preparation work
- Anything that could affect the safest and most practical approach

That small amount of preparation helps reduce surprises and gives both the client and carpenter a clearer understanding of what is involved.

JARMO Carpentry is generally available for inspections and measure-ups after 3:00 pm on weekdays by arrangement.

BEHIND JARMO: GOOD WORK STARTS BEFORE ARRIVING ON SITE

The time on the tools is only one part of a carpentry job.

Before work begins, there may be a site inspection, measurements to check, material quantities to calculate, products and fixings to research, orders to prepare and a practical sequence of work to plan.

That preparation helps the job run more smoothly, reduces unnecessary waste and gives the client a clearer idea of what is involved.

JARMO Carpentry is still a growing small business, but every job receives the same careful thought I would expect at my own home.

WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: CHECK THE FIXINGS, NOT JUST THE BOARDS

When a deck starts to feel loose or uneven, the decking boards are not always the whole problem.

Fixings can loosen, corrode or pull through over time. Movement may also indicate an issue with the joists, blocking or support beneath the deck.

Things worth watching for include:

- Raised screw or nail heads
- Boards moving underfoot
- Rust staining around fixings
- Split boards near fastener points
- Loose fascia or edge boards
- Unusual movement in the deck frame

Early repairs are generally simpler than waiting until movement causes wider damage.

If something does not feel right, send JARMO Carpentry a few clear photos, your suburb and a short description.
