At SME Civil, the way we work is grounded in long term relationships with clients, head contractors, subcontractors and suppliers. Civil construction is complex, and the projects that run well are usually the ones where people can talk openly, solve problems together and build trust together.

A large portion of our work comes from repeat clients and ongoing partnerships. For us, that is the strongest endorsement we can receive. It tells us that our focus on clear communication, safety, quality and reliability is making a genuine difference on site.

Whether we are delivering bulk earthworks, drainage, structures or complete civil packages, our goal is always the same. Support the project team, protect the program and leave a positive impression so that everyone is comfortable working together again.

If you are looking for a civil contractor who values relationships as much as results, we would be pleased to talk about how SME Civil can support your next project.

Big news for the SME Civil team!

We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the civil works for Ballarat Tractors, with MKM Building Group as the main builder. This is a great opportunity to support a valued client in a key regional centre and to continue our strong working relationship with MKM.

Our team will be focused on delivering reliable, well presented civil works that set the project up for long term performance. As always, we will bring a strong focus on safety, quality and clear coordination with the wider project team.

Thank you to MKM Building Group and Ballarat Tractors for placing their trust in SME Civil. We are looking forward to getting started on site and sharing more updates as the project progresses.

At SME Civil, we deliver full civil packages as a single-source provider from early planning and constructability input through to delivery and handover. With one team responsible for earthworks, structures, roads and services. Our clients get clearer coordination, fewer interfaces and better control of risk. Our Racecourse Road Culvert & Ford Crossing Upgrade is a great example of this.

Before: Racecourse Road was constrained by an ageing culvert and low road level across Kororoit Creek, creating flood risk and a pinch point for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. On a $3M upgrade in a live waterway surrounded by protected vegetation, existing services and a nearby community our solution tailored to tight environmental and safety controls.

During: SME Civil temporarily diverted the creek to safely demolish the existing crossing, then installed 25 new precast box culverts with headwalls and wingwalls, integrated fish passage and extensive rock beaching to stabilise the banks. The road was raised by around 1.5 metres to improve flood immunity, while a new shared user path and upgraded approaches were delivered under live traffic, with detours, signage and close coordination with Hobsons Bay City Council and Melbourne Water.

After: The finished crossing now provides a higher, safer and more resilient connection over Kororoit Creek, reducing future flood risk and improving access for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Careful attention to pavement construction, surface levels and detailing has created a road that not only looks clean and well-presented, but is also fully fit for purpose and built to perform over the long term. The result is a durable piece of infrastructure that lifts the corridor visually and functionally, and showcases SME Civil’s ability to deliver complex works to a very high standard from planning through to final finish.

If you’re planning a complex civil package and want a full-service partner who can add value at every stage of the project, we’d love to talk. Get in touch with the SME Civil team to discuss how we can support your next project. https://smecivil.com.au/

On 26 January we reflect on our shared history, recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of Country and acknowledge that this day carries different meanings for many Australians.

At SME Civil we help shape stronger communities by delivering safe, reliable civil infrastructure that supports how people live, travel and connect across Australia.

We plan and deliver our projects with respect for Country and the communities we work with and we thank our teams, clients and partners for the role they play in building a more connected and resilient nation.

At SME Civil, strong management systems sit at the centre of how we deliver projects.

Our health and safety management system holds ISO 45001 certification. We drive a safety first culture on every site and align only with subcontractors who share that commitment. This focus has helped us maintain an LTI free record since our inception in 2010.

Our environmental management system holds ISO 14001 certification and focuses on genuine performance, not just paperwork. We minimise waste and recycle at least 80 per cent of site materials through accredited waste management systems.

Our ISO 9001 certified quality management system underpins consistent delivery. Internal QA processes, including ITPs that capture live site data, support efficient delivery and smooth handover while confirming the quality of the assets we build.

These certifications reflect the way we work each day. They help our clients and stakeholders trust that SME Civil will plan well, execute with discipline and hand over safe, compliant and high performing civil infrastructure.

SME Civil recently reconstructed 3.4 km of Old Lancefield Road in Woodend, VIC for Macedon Ranges Shire Council, strengthening a key rural link and lifting safety for local residents.

During construction, our team focused on minimising risk, quality and safety compliance, maintaining access and minimising disruption for the local community.

Contaminated and hazardous material management:
Geotechnical and environmental investigations identified Category C contaminated soils. SME Civil:

• Segregated contaminated material on impermeable hardstands
• Wrapped, labelled and transported soils using licensed carriers
• Maintained full traceability through EPA Waste Transport Certificates
• Engaged independent hygienists to monitor air quality and asbestos fibres

These controls followed EPA Industrial Waste Resource Guidelines and our Site Environmental Management Plan and achieved full compliance.

General and electrical safety compliance
• Working under live High Voltage power. SME Civil:
• Maintained full electrical safety compliance
• Excavated adjacent to HV power poles including implementation of temporary supports required
• Engaged with power authority to carry out permit processes
• Safely completed nearly 300m of drainage pipe and pits installation under the live power lines
• Maintaining power continuity to residents for the duration of works

Traffic and public interface
Working under live traffic created significant public and worker interface risks. SME Civil:
• Developed detailed Traffic Management Plans in accordance with AS 1742.3 and secured Council approval
• Deployed accredited traffic controllers, signage and barriers to manage vehicle, pedestrian and public transport movements
• Staged construction to maintain one lane access for emergency vehicles at all times
• Coordinated advance public notifications and detour signage with local and public transport authorities

SME Civil feels proud to support the Woodend community with a more durable, safer road asset that will serve residents for years to come.
