It’s been another big year for M Plumbing with January quickly booking out. I was fortunate to have two apprentices that worked under me visit for the easter break. Its amazing how time flys, i was able to see both these guys from their first day at work to becoming tradesmen. Only just out of my time when i started working with them and looking back on it now it was a great experience teaching and learning a great deal myself. Happy to have stayed in touch after all these years πŸ‘Œ. Never know my little fella may end up being a plumber himself. πŸ”§πŸš°πŸšΏ

Fire hose reels are a very important install in many settings and are installed in appropriate locations for the site layout. They are useful for putting out fires, however many may overlook that they can be an aid in escaping a fire helping the user make their way to their escape route. Fire training is a very important part of many facilities, knowing where fire fighting equipment is located, how to use and when equipment should be tested/serviced.

I was fortunate enough to spend some time travelling Australia, the Top End TWICE! this time round. If its something you have been thinking of doing, do it! Best thing we ever did. One camp had a donkey hot water set up, for those of you who don’t know, its a drum or appropriate material water storage tank mounted above a fire to heat the water. I loved it! You would light a fire under it, wait 30 mins and go for a shower, just gotta keep a watch out as other campers would be sneaky to get in a hot shower before you 🀣. The fire heats the water much like a gas flame of a gas storage hot water system, the hot water rises to the top and follows the pipe out to the plumbing fixtures it has been piped to such as a shower. As cool as these systems are please don’t go and make one for yourself as hot water systems have safety features inbuilt to prevent them exploding from over pressurising or delivering scolding hot water temperatures and in both instances can be fatal. This unit looked to have been welded by someone who knew what they were doing and also had a pressure relief valve installed πŸ‘Œ.

Plumbers are now required to install tempering valves when installing a new hot water system if there is not one already installed, this lowers the temperature down to 50 dagrees celsius medigating the risk of scolding to the user.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION. Since the first days of my apprenticeship i tested, serviced and installed backflow prevention devices. Later in my career i found myself working for a water authority in the backflow prevention team where i really got to dive into that area of plumbing from a corporate perspective. I was even given the opportunity to present a project i was working on to the Water Services Association of Australia. Backflow prevention is a very important part of the plumbing world and different types of backflow prevention devices are used to protect our precious drinking water from cross contamination. Cross contamination can occur from either a back pressure or back siphonage scenario allowing for contaminants to enter the water supply. Examples of backflow events are leaving a hose in a bucket of non drinking solution and a water main break occurs causing back siphonage or a cross connection to an alternative water source that may be running at a higher pressure. Have you ever seen a dump point? (A dump point is a waste point designed to receive wastewater and liquid waste from caravans and other vehicles with mobile toilet and sanitation fixtures). Anyone who has used a dump point will know there is a tap and a hose, imagine if a hose long enough to reach down inside was left in and a backflow event happened, this could cause a negative outcome if the drinking water was containminated with sewage and not appropriately protected. If you have any queries regarding backflow prevention or would like an audit on a property to determine the risk rating don’t hesitate to contact me on 0415290333. πŸ”§πŸš°πŸšΏ
