Plico Design Studio

Plico Design Studio Architecture. Heritage. Research. Plico Design Studio is an Architecture, Interior Design and Heritage Research company based in Port Melbourne, Australia.

We specialise in adapting historical places and contexts to create spaces which respond to contemporary use. As a member of Australian Architects Declare, an international network of architects committed to addressing climate and biodiversity emergency, we aim to operate under the values of responsibility and openness, pursuing innovation from conception to delivery of each project. We look for cr

eative solutions to minimise our projects’ carbon footprint whilst responding to clients’ needs. We recognise heritage as an enabler of sustainability, and contribute to the circular economy in salvaging materials for reuse and repurposing these in our works. Our versatility and flexibility are shown in our variety of key projects, which include adaptive reuse, contemporary design, commercial, public and residential projects. You’ll find us at Zoos Victoria, Heritage Sites, Solar Farms, veterinarian and medical rooms, educational institutions, churches, gyms, and in suburban and regional homes across Victoria and Tasmania. We collaborate with other creative disciplines depending on the requirements for each project, including specialist designers for Interpretation, Interiors, Landscape and other artists. We travel far and wide to bring inspiration and apply knowledge from around the world directly to our projects.

Our role as Heritage Consultants is to protect heritage significance of a site that can be concealed beneath the surface or on adjoining sites.

This applies to our project, ACDC Williamstown. In this case, we’re not referring to the famous rockstars, but rather, the Advanced Development Centre, that specialises in the design and manufacturing composite structures for the aerospace, maritime and defence sectors.

Plico Design Studio provided Heritage Consultancy services to our long-time collaborators, indigenous construction company , guiding them to fulfil their requirements to obtain Heritage approvals for this project, on the Williamstown Foreshore.

We prepared and presented induction material educating the construction team of how to recognise unexpected heritage finds. This was facilitated by Archaeologists from Biosis who are also engaged to monitor excavation works.

The nearby heritage listed Former Melbourne Harbour Trust Workshops, Stores and Former Ann Street Morgue will be protected whilst the works to this Defence site is undertaken by the expert Barpa team.

Plico Design Studio is excited to present our progress on our Adaptive Reuse commission in Derrinallum, Western Victoria. The former Presbyterian/Uniting Church will be restored and converted into a gallery space with minimal intervention, to protect the built and social heritage of this former place of worship.

The adjacent timber framed Church Hall will be adapted into a residence for the owner to reside. This will include upgrades to insulation, glazing and electrical to improve sustainable performance. We’ve enjoyed designing spaces for the owner’s intrepid cats, and can’t wait to show you in further posts.

Multiple repurposed elements have been sourced for integration into the project to minimise reliance on new materials, and to prioritise authenticity and again sustainability. We are working closely with our client to ensure there is minimal impact on the significance of heritage site and streetscape, whilst creating an efficient and comfortable abode for them to enjoy.

We look forward to sharing the project with you!

Plico Design Studio is proud to work with not-for-profit organisations including the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF), who perform important work with children who have faced trauma in their lives. Partnering with Indigenous construction company Barpa Construction Services, we have prepared the fitout design for ACF’s new Perth WA offices. Focusing on value for investment, we have maximised the use of existing materials and building fabric, whilst adapting the former space to suit the new purpose for adminsitration, counselling and training within a positive atmosphere.

Delighted to present more photos of our Adeney Street Yarraville Residential, an Inter-War Brick Cottage built in the 1940s, that transformed into a contemporary family home priorising connection to landscape, natural light and open spaces, for our clients with a young family.

This considered transformation enhances the original home whilst creating a more open, efficient and welcoming environment for contemporary family life.

Collaborating with Interior Designers .doherty and our fantastic clients , the design resolves around a simple timber-clad form that balances strong street presence with respectful connection to the existing brick dwelling, opening generously to the garden.

Material layering of timber, breeze block and concrete, unifies old and new, while refined planning supports both shared and private living.

We’re delighted with the cohesive design across Architecture, Interiors and Landscape.

Plico Design Studio is pleased to announce that Building Permit approval has been secured for our latest project, the Port Melbourne Medical Clinic.

The clinic will relocate from its existing premises to a purpose-designed facility on Bay Street upon completion later this year. The project involves the full fitout of a former commercial tenancy into a contemporary specialist medical clinic, tailored to support both practitioners and patients.

Construction is now underway, with the contractors TMC Projects and Vern Built leading delivery on site.

We look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses.

We’re excited to present our scale model of the Tarra Bulga Visitor Centre in Gippsland, our project with and the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation .

Collaborating with , Experience Designers ‘Aeroplane Workshop’, and Graphic Designers ‘Person Place Thing’, we’re evaluating the existing building and establishing how this may be adapted, to enhance the visitor and interpretation experience.

It’s unusual to prepare a scale model for clients, however given the diversity of project stakeholders, this best enabled to explore how the existing spaces work, for our team and stakeholders.
